Korean swimmer Hwang Sun-woo is looking to medal at the 2022 Asian Games.

Hwang, 19, headed to Australia on Wednesday to prepare for the 2022 Asiad.

The 2022 Asian Games kicks off in September this year after being postponed for a year due to a surge in Covid-19 cases in China.

Hwang, Lee Ho-joon, Kim Woo-min and Yang Jae-hoon are in Australia to train with coach Richard Scarce, who is well-known for his intense approach.

“I heard that Scarce’s training is tough, which I think will be helpful,” Hwang told reporters at Incheon International Airport before his departure on Wednesday. “It is true that it gets tough during training because of an increased amount of physical activity and the intensity level.

“I think maintaining the mindset of not giving up until the end is important because I have to play in the FINA World Aquatics Championship and Asian Games this season.”

The FINA World Aquatics Championship will take place in July in Fukuoka, Japan ahead of the Asian Games in September.

Team Korea is seeking a gold medal in the 4x200-meter freestyle relay at the Asian Games.

Korea has never won a gold medal in the freestyle relay at the Asiad, with the country’s best record being a silver medal at the 1994 Asian Games when Ji Sang-jun, Woo Chul, Woo Won-ki and Bang Seung-hun finished second.

“I think the Asian Games this year is the most important. Not only the 100 and 200 meters, but I also have high hopes for winning the 4x200-meter freestyle relay that no Korean has won before,” Hwang said.

The upcoming Asian Games will be the first Asiad for Hwang, who has won two gold medals and one silver medal at the FINA World Swimming Championships: A gold in 2021 a gold and a silver last year.

The 2022 Asian Games kicks off in September in Hangzhou, China.
