Doosan Enerbility to supply U.S. nuclear reactor project

Doosan Enerbility will supply core materials for a small modular reactor (SMR) project in the U.S., the company said Friday.
 
NuScale Power, a Portland, Oregon-based SMR start-up, placed an order for core parts and materials for a 462-megawatt project in Idaho with Doosan Enerbility.
 
The Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems’ Carbon Free Power project aims to deploy six of NuScale’s 77-megawatt SMR modules in Idaho and begin commercial operation as early as 2029.
 
SMRs are reactors that can produce 300 megawatts of power or less, compared to the average of about 1 gigawatt for conventional reactors. Manufactured as units, SMRs are believed to have greater scalability and siting flexibility.
 
With the signing of the latest contract, Doosan Enebility will supply core materials such as heavy forgings, steam generator tubes and weld material for NuScale’s reactor pressure vessels.
 
The Changwon, South Gyeongsang-based company already manufactured forging dies for NuScale’s reactor pressure vessels after signing the deal in April last year.
 
Doosan Enerbility and NuScale are working to manufacture additional modules for future SMR projects, according to the companies.
 
“The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) recently issued a final rule to certify NuScale's innovative SMR design, which gives testament to NuScale’s status as the leading technology in the global SMR market,” said Kim Jong-doo, head of the nuclear business division of Doosan Enerbility.
 
John Hopkins, NuScale CEO, said that “finalizing and submitting this order to our valued partner, Doosan, showcases NuScale’s transition to the manufacturing phase of our modules.”
 
NuScale is the first and only company to have received U.S. NRC approval for an SMR design, which was granted in 2020.
