Set in 1950s Seoul, the story revolves around a girl named Jeong-nyeon, who dreams of becoming the best changgeuk performer.
Renowned pansori (traditional Korean narrative singing) singer Lee Ja-ram is the composer and music director of the show. Lee said she wrote some 50 pansori scores for the new work.
Actors Cho Yu-ah and Yi So-yeon alternate the role of Jeong-nyeon while Kim Kum-mi plays the role of Jeong-nyeon’s mother.
The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays and at 3 p.m. on weekends.
Tickets range from 20,000 won ($15.30) to 50,000 won.

March 17 – May 21: The Korean musical “Hero,” which centers on the life of Ahn Jung-geun, the Korean independence fighter who was executed in 1910 after assassinating Japanese Resident-General Ito Hirobumi, will be back again at the Blue Square in central Seoul.
The musical has recently been turned into a film by director Yoon Je-kyun.
The musical stars actor Jeong Seong-hwa who plays the lead character Ahn in the film as well. Musical actor Yang Jun-mo and Min Woo-hyuk will also alternate the role with Jeong.
The musical starts at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends. There are no shows on Mondays.
Tickets range from 70,000 won to 150,000 won.

THE MUSICAL CATS
Sejong Center for the Performing Arts, Grand Theater
Through March 20: One of the most well-known musicals across the globe, “Cats,” is back again for the first time in three years. The original production team, which came to Korea in 2020 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of its debut, has made a return.
“Cats” was composed by Andrew Lloyd Webber and produced by Cameron Mackintosh, based on the “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot, and tells the story of a tribe of cats called the Jellicles who must make the “Jellicle choice” to decide which of them will ascend to the Heaviside Layer to be reborn.
The musical is performed in English with Korean subtitles.
The musical starts at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays; 3 p.m. on Wednesdays and at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and public holidays.
There are no shows on Mondays.
Tickets range from 60,000 won to 170,000 won.

MAMMA MIA!

March 24 – June 25: The Korean production of this megahit musical is returning to the Chungmu Arts Center in central Seoul.
Sophie is about to get married and wants her father to give her away, but the problem is she doesn’t know who her father is. After taking a peek in her mother’s diary, she discovers that he could be one of three candidates, so she tricks them all into attending her wedding.
The cast includes veteran musical actresses Choi Jung-won and Shin Young-sook as Donna.
The show starts at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays; 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends. There are no shows on Mondays.

SIX THE MUSICAL
COEX SHINHAN CARD ARTIUM
Through March 26: British musical comedy “SIX” with book, music and lyrics by Toby Marlow and Lucy Moss premiered at the COEX Shinhan Card Artium in southern Seoul on March 10. This original production is being performed in English with Korean subtitles.
The show revolves around the six wives of Henry VIII, who compete to tell their story of how much they suffered due to their husband, in the style of a pop concert.
The musical premiered at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2017 and was performed by students from Cambridge University. It then went to West End in 2019, followed by Broadway in March 2020.
The cast includes Chloe Hart, playing the role of Catherine of Aragon, Jennifer Caldwell playing Anne Boleyn, as well as Casey Al-Shaqsy for Jane Seymour, Jessica Niles for Anna of Cleves, Rebecca Wickes for Katherine Howard and Alana M Robinson for Catherine Parr.
As soon as the tour production comes to an end, a Korean production with a Korean cast will begin at the same venue from March 31 and run through to June 25.
Tickets range from 70,000 won to 140,000 won.

KWON JIN-AH CONCERT, “THE FLAG”

March 31 to April 2: Singer and songwriter Kwon Jin-ah will hold a solo concert for three days.
Kwon is expected to perform tracks from her latest EP “The Flag,” which dropped on March 2.
Kwon first caught the public’s attention with her vocals in 2013, when she was a contestant on the third season of SBS’ audition program “Kpop Star.” After coming in third place on the show, she went on to join Antenna Music, an entertainment firm founded by singer-songwriter You Hee-yeol.
The concert begins at 8 p.m. on Friday, at 6 p.m. on Saturday and at 5 p.m. on Sunday.
Tickets range from 110,000 won to 132,000 won.

DEATH NOTE
Charlotte Theater
April 1 – June 18: The Korean production of the musical “Death Note” is making a return at the Charlotte Theater in southern Seoul.
The musical is based on the Japanese manga series of the same title by Tsugumi Obha and Takeshi Obata.
With music by Frank Wildhorn and lyrics by Jack Murphy, the musical premiered in Korea in 2015.
The story follows a high school student named Yagami Light, who stumbles upon a notebook that kills those whose names get written in it.
Actors Hong Kwang-ho and Ko Eun-sung alternate the role of Yagami Light, while Kim Jun-su and Kim Seong-chul alternate the role of L. Jang Eun-ah and Lee Young-mi will alternate the role Amane Misa.
The show begins at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. on weekends and public holidays. There are no shows on Mondays.
Tickets range from 80,000 won to 160,000 won.

AMADEUS

Through April 11: From the mind of British playwright Peter Shaffer, the Korean production of the play tells the tale of composers Antonio Salieri and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. While they are similar in their thirst for music, Mozart’s ingenuity and talent torments palace composer Salieri.
The role of Mozart is being alternated by Jeon Seong-woo, Lee Jae-gyun and Choi Woo-hyuk.
The performance starts at 7:30 p.m. on weekdays; 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Saturdays; and at 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays.
There are no shows on Mondays.
Ticket prices range from 66,000 to 99,000 won.

BEAUTIFUL MINT LIFE

May 13 and 14: Spring is here and so is popular music festival “Beautiful Mint Life.”
This year’s lineup of artists includes 10cm, Jukjae, Soran, Sunwoo Jungah, Jung Joon-il, Peppertones, Lacuna, among others.
The gate for the festival opens at 12 p.m.
A day ticket costs 110,000 won.

SEOUL JAZZ FESTIVAL 2023

May 26 – 28: This year’s 15th edition of the popular Seoul Jazz Festival will be held for three days.
The festival will feature artists including Sergio Mendes, Mika, Damien Rice, Gregory Porter, Robert Glasper, Kamal, Spanish Harlem Orchestra, Mina Okabe and Sigrid. Korean acts include Crush, AKMU, Jung Seung-hwan, Taeyang, Epik High, among many others.
A three-day ticket costs 420,000 won.
