Korea to bolster efforts to protect Korean copyrights overseas

Korea will up government efforts to protect Korean content copyrights in Thailand, related government agencies and companies said in a joint press release Monday.
The Korea Copyright Protection Agency (Kcopa) held a joint conference with Kakao Entertainment, the Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (Kotra), the Copyright Overseas Promotion Association (COA) and the Department of Intellectual Property of the government of Thailand on March 24 entitled “Intellectual Property Protection Conference” (translated) and discussed strengthening copyright protection in both Korea and Thailand.
The conference is a regular event held in the first and second half of each year by the Department of Intellectual Property under the Ministry of Commerce of Thailand, and expand investment attraction of overseas companies and agencies by discussing and supporting copyright and intellectual property rights related issues of major countries.
In the meeting held on March 24, responses to online copyright infringement of Korean content were discussed, and Korean government agencies and companies requested policy support and practical cooperation from the Thai government for the purpose of protecting Korean content, according to Kcopa. The Thai government promised the establishment of a close communication channel between Korean agencies and companies with Thailand’s copyright protection authorities for this purpose.
“We plan to do our best to strengthen cooperation networks with overseas related organizations so that the copyrights of our Korean content including that of webtoons and dramas can be protected overseas,” said Park Jung-youl, president of Kcopa, in the press release Monday. “We will play our role not only as a content powerhouse but also as a country advanced in copyright protection by actively providing the capabilities and know-how of a protection agency.”
