Samsung SDI displayed its newest prismatic batteries and cylindrical batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) at Auto Shanghai 2023, the battery maker said Tuesday.
Auto Shanghai 2023, or the Shanghai International Automobile Industry Exhibition, runs for 10 days starting Tuesday. Also known as Auto China, the event is held annually, with Beijing and Shanghai hosting the show in alternate years.
The company showcased its future battery technologies at the Shanghai event, introducing its latest products to the Chinese market.
Displayed at its private booth were Samsung SDI’s high-nickel NCA — nickel, cobalt, aluminum-based — prismatic battery, named the P6.
Samsung SDI improved the energy density of the P6 battery by over 10 percent compared to the previous P5, by enhancing the nickel content in its cathode to 91 percent and adopting silicon-carbon-nanocomposite material technology. It supports ultra-fast charging as well, that can be recharged to 80 percent in 10 minutes.
Mass production will begin next year.
Samsung SDI also displayed a cylindrical battery measuring 46 millimeters in diameter, featuring larger sizes and improved performances compared to the previous products, as well as its vision for developing solid-state batteries. The company aims to begin mass-produced solid-state batteries in 2027.
Samsung SDI’s PRiMX battery brand was introduced for the first time in China during the Shanghai event as well.
Samsung SDI recently established a research center in China to bolster its foothold in the country.
