Kai of boy band EXO, who surprised his fans by announcing that he has to begin military on May 11, will hold a fan meeting on May 9 at Yes 24 Live Hall in Gwangjin District, eastern Seoul. The fan meeting will be held free of charge, with prior applications from attendees. For those who couldn't get their hands on the tickets, SM Entertainment said it will also livestream the fan meeting on EXO's YouTube channel.

The decision to hold such a sudden fan meeting free of charge was made as Kai's military enlistment was abruptly decided. SM Entertainment announced just Wednesday that Kai will be leaving to serve the mandatory military service eight days later.

SM Entertainment initially said that he could no longer defer the enlistment due to "the Military Manpower Administration's recent change of policy." However, on the following day, the administration said there had been no changes regarding enlistment, and added that regardless of their status, all those who are subject to serve in the military are allowed to defer their enlistment up to five times for different reasons over the course of two years.

Due to Kai's enlistment, EXO has to postpone its schedule. The boy band was planning to release a new album in the second half of this year. The planned comeback would have been the boy band's first album with all its eight Korean members in four years.

After receiving his basic military training, Kai will be serving as a social service agent. The agency did not reveal the reason Kai will be serving as a social service agent.

Kai released "Rover" on March 13, his third EP following "KAI" (2020) and "Peaches"
(2021).
