GOAT stands for “The Greatest of All Time.” The term is often replaced with a picture or photo of a goat, the animal. The expression is mostly used for athletes who have left outstanding marks in sports.

GOAT was first used to describe the legendary boxer Muhammad Ali in the 1990s. The name of the company established by Ali’s family to manage Ali’s intellectual property rights, including portrait rights, is “G.O.A.T.” This expression has been widely known since the success of the album “The G.O.A.T.” which was released by American rapper and actor LL Cool J in 2000.

Since then, athletes who have made unprecedented achievements in each field have begun to be called GOAT. Examples include Michael Jordan in basketball, quarterback Tom Brady in American football, Wayne Gretzky in ice hockey, Babe Ruth in baseball, and Tiger Woods in golf.

In soccer, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo competed fiercely for the GOAT title. A good rivalry was created between the two superb players, from the number of the Ballon d’Or wins — the highest honor for soccer players — to their performances in various international events, career records and even the amount of their charitable donations. The rivalry that lasted over a decade ended with Messi’s victory, as Messi led Argentina to the Qatar World Cup victory and achieved the “career grand slam.”

Messi, who secured the “Football GOAT” status, recently received a proposal for an astronomical amount of salary while considering a transfer. Saudi Arabian football club Al-Hilal sent him an offer with a total of 600 million euros ($655.8 million) for two years. The sum exceeds the 400 million euros proposed to Ronaldo by another Saudi club Al-Nassr by nearly 300 billion won ($225.9 million). As Messi denied the reports of agreement, the issue has subsided. But there is a good possibility for further discussion. Money cannot explain everything, but in terms of pay, the value and presence of “GOAT Messi” is overwhelming.

GOAT는 ‘역대 최고의 인물’을 일컫는 영어 표현(The Greatest of All Time)의 약자다. 염소를 의미하는 영어단어와 일치해 염소 사진이나 그림으로 대체해 표현하는 경우도 많다. 주로 스포츠 종목에서 압도적인 발자취를 남긴 선수에게 존경의 의미를 담아 사용한다.

GOAT는 ‘복싱 영웅’ 무하마드 알리를 지칭하는 수식어로 1990년대 미국에서 처음 사용됐다. 알리의 가족이 초상권 등 알리의 지적재산권을 관리하기 위해 설립한 회사의 명칭이 ‘G.O.A.T 주식회사’다. 이 표현이 세계적으로 널리 퍼진 건 지난 2000년 래퍼 겸 배우 LL 쿨 J가 발표한 곡 ‘The G.O.A.T’가 흥행한 이후부터로 알려져 있다.

이후 종목별로 범접할 수 없는 업적을 남긴 선수들이 GOAT로 불리기 시작했다. ‘농구 황제’ 마이클 조던(농구)을 비롯해 ‘전설의 쿼터백’ 톰 브래디(미식축구), ‘빙판의 영웅’ 웨인 그레츠키(아이스하키), ‘홈런왕’ 베이브 루스(야구), ‘골프 황제’ 타이거 우즈(골프) 등이 대표적이다.

축구에선 리오넬 메시와 크리스티아누 호날두가 GOAT 자리를 놓고 치열하게 경쟁했다. 축구선수 최고의 영예인 발롱도르상 수상 횟수부터 각종 국제대회 성적, 통산 기록, 심지어 기부 액수에 이르기까지 모든 분야에서 선의의 대결 구도가 만들어졌다. 10여 년 넘게 이어진 두 선수의 경쟁은 지난해 카타르월드컵에서 아르헨티나의 우승을 이끌며 ‘커리어 그랜드슬램’을 달성한 메시의 승리로 일단락됐다.

‘축구 GOAT’ 자리를 꿰찬 메시가 최근 이적 여부를 검토하는 과정에서 제시받은 연봉은 문자 그대로 천문학적이다. 사우디아라비아의 축구 클럽 알힐랄이 2년간 총액 6억 유로(약 8700억원)를 부르며 러브콜을 보냈다. 라이벌 호날두가 앞서 또 다른 사우디 클럽 알나스르에 입단하며 보장받은 금액(4억 유로, 5800억원)을 3000억원 가까이 뛰어넘은 거액이다. 이적 합의가 이뤄졌다는 외신 보도를 메시 측이 부정하며 관련 이슈가 일단 수면 아래로 가라앉았지만 추후 재논의가 이뤄질 가능성은 충분하다. 돈으로 모든 걸 설명할 순 없겠으나 드러난 숫자만으로도 ‘GOAT 메시’의 가치와 존재감은 압도적이다.
