HD Hyundai Energy Solutions clinched a 22-megawatt solar module supply deal in Angola with a Portuguese developer, the company said Monday.

It is HD Hyundai Energy Solutions’ first supply deal for a project in an African country.

HD Hyundai Energy Solutions, a solar panel supplier 53.57-percent owned by Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering, signed a supply deal with Portugal’s MCA, to provide solar modules for government-funded solar power plant projects in Angola.

MCA will build two solar power plants in Angola, one in Bailundo and another in Kuito, with HD Hyundai Energy Solutions’ solar modules of 500-watt capacity per unit.

The combined generation capacity of the two projects comes in at 22 megawatts, which can supply power to 140,000 local residents.

The 500-watt double-sided solar module, which will be deployed in the Angolan projects, has a 30 percent higher generation capacity compared to an average solar module as it can absorb energy on both sides of the panel.

Moreover, half-cut technology, which reduces resistive losses and therefore increases output by cutting cells in half to shorten the distance the energy travels between cells, was used to further ramp up efficiency, according to the company.

HD Hyundai Energy Solutions plans to participate in a bid for a 300-megawatt solar plant project in Angola, which will kick off in the first half of 2024.

“We will further expand our foothold in the African market by supplying high-performance, high-quality products for not only government-led projects but also private ones,” said an HD Hyundai Energy Solutions spokesperson.
