Denver, the state capital of Colorado, may not be a widely known city in Korea like New York or Los Angeles. However, in the United States, it is famous as a road and aviation hub. These days, it is famous as the hometown of professional sports teams.

The name Denver comes from James Denver, the governor of Kansas. But Governor Denver did not visit the city named after him during his term.

Denver is an alpine city at an altitude of 1,600 meters (5,249 feet), located in the eastern valley of the Rocky Mountains. It is nicknamed a “mile-high city.” It’s the same as a city built on the top of Mount Kumgang (1,638 meters high). In the old West, Denver was spotlighted as one of the major bases of the gold rush.

The mountain city with clean water and air is well equipped with nursing infrastructure for older adults and patients, as well as facilities for various winter sports and climbing. In America, Denver is the epitome of a clean and quite mountain town.

What makes the peaceful and calm city excited is none other than sports. With a population of 3 million, Denver has four major professional sports teams, Denver Broncos for American football, Colorado Rockies for baseball, Colorado Avalanche for ice hockey and Denver Nuggets for basketball.

In general, American football teams lead the local sports boom, but it is different this year. For the first time in its history, a basketball team — the Denver Nuggets — have advanced to the finals this season. After being founded in 1967, the Nuggets joined the National Basketball Association (NBA) in 1976. In nearly half a century, it has never won the Larry O’Brien NBA Championship Trophy.

This season is an opportunity to win it for the first time. The Nuggets have the momentum by beating LA Lakers — which always hindered the Nuggets’ advancement to the Final — with all four wins in the Western Conference Finals this season. The American media, which regarded the Nuggets as the sidekick of the Lakers, now consider them “a strong candidate for the championship.”

Denver will play against the winner of the Eastern Conference Finals between Boston Celtics and Miami Heat. A new day is approaching to Denver — an “underdog” in the American society — and to the Nuggets, the “underdog” of Denver’s professional sports.

미국 중서부 콜로라도주(州)의 주도인 덴버는 뉴욕이나 LA처럼 국내에 널리 알려진 도시가 아니다. 하지만 미국에선 도로 및 항공 교통의 요지로 유명하다. 요즘엔 프로 스포츠팀의 연고지로 이름이 났다.

덴버라는 지명은 1858년 시 출범 당시 속해 있던 캔자스주의 주지사 이름(제임스 덴버)에서 따왔다. 하지만 덴버 주지사는 자신의 이름을 딴 도시를 재임 기간 중 단 한 번도 방문하지 않았다고 한다.

덴버는 로키산맥 동쪽 골짜기에 위치한 해발고도 1600m의 고산 도시다. ‘마일 하이(mile-high) 시티’라는 별칭이 붙은 이유다. 금강산 꼭대기쯤에 도시가 만들어진 셈이다. 서부 개척시대에는 금광업이 성행해 골드러시의 주요 근거지로도 주목받았다.

물 맑고 공기 깨끗한 산악 도시인만큼 각종 겨울 스포츠 및 클라이밍 시설뿐만 아니라 노인과 환자들을 위한 요양 관련 인프라도 잘 갖춰져 있다. 미국 사회에서 덴버는 ‘깨끗하고 조용한 산속 도시’의 대명사로 통한다.

이렇듯 평온한 덴버를 뜨겁게 달구는 콘텐트는 다름 아닌 스포츠다. 300만 명에 이르는 인구를 바탕으로 미식축구(덴버 브롱코스), 야구(콜로라도 로키스), 아이스하키(콜로라도 에벌랜치), 농구(덴버 너기츠) 등 북미 4대 프로 스포츠팀을 모두 보유하고 있다.

통상적으로 미식 축구팀이 지역 스포츠 붐을 주도하는데, 올해에는 분위기가 다르다. 농구팀 너기츠가 창단 이후 최초로 올 시즌 미국프로농구(NBA) 파이널에 진출하며 농구 열풍을 몰고 왔다. 너기츠는 1967년 창단해 1976년 NBA 무대에 합류했다. 이후 반세기 가까이 흘렀지만 단 한 번도 래리 오브라이언(NBA 우승 트로피의 별칭)을 품어보지 못했다.

올 시즌은 첫 우승의 호기다. 결승 진출 문턱에서 번번이 발목을 잡은 농구 명가 LA레이커스를 서부 콘퍼런스 파이널에서 4전 전승으로 제압하며 기세를 높였다. 당초 너기츠를 레이커스의 들러리쯤으로 여기던 미국 언론도 비로소 ‘강력한 우승 후보’로 꼽을 정도다.

덴버는 보스턴 셀틱스와 마이애미 히트가 맞붙은 동부 콘퍼런스 파이널 승자와 우승을 다툰다. 미국 사회의 ‘언더독’인 덴버, 그 덴버의 프로 스포츠 중 ‘언더독’인 너기츠에 해 뜰 날이 다가오고 있다.
