Hyundai Motor is seeking to expand its foothold in the Japanese market via its partnership with a local content company that will focus on electric vehicle (EV)-related services.

The automaker on Thursday said that it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Culture Convenience Club (CCC), a Tokyo-based content company that runs a video rental franchise and bookstores.

With the signing of the MOU, Hyundai will operate a car-sharing service named Mocean at T-Site, a shopping mall run by CCC, starting Friday. T-Site customers will be able to use Hyundai’s EV charging services and the Ioniq 5 car-sharing service.

Hyundai has been already providing its Mocean service in Yokohama, Okinawa, and other Japanese cities, and plans to expand its operation further by tapping into the CCC’s local networks.

The two companies also agreed to jointly develop various content services to attract Japanese customers. Major areas of focus include data-based marketing and the creation of an EV experience zone.

The companies plan to run a personalized marketing campaign based on Hyundai’s automotive data and the CCC’s customer data, in order to promote “a new lifestyle” amid the fast-growing trend for zero-emission vehicle deployment, according to Hyundai Motor.

Hyundai will also set up an EV experience zone at its regional base for the Southeast Asian region, which the company is currently preparing to open, jointly with the CCC.

“We expect that the collaboration between a mobility and content company will create new opportunities,” said Hyundai Motor CEO Chang Jae-hoon.
