'Oldboy' re-release tops $1.26 million at U.S. box office

The re-release of Park Chan-wook’s thriller film “Oldboy” (2003) raked in $1.26 million at the U.S. box office.
 
The re-release of “Oldboy,” which hit theaters on Aug. 16 in the U.S., hit $1.26 million as of Thursday, according to the latest data from aggregator Box Office Mojo.
 
“Oldboy” tells the story of Oh Dae-su, played by Choi Min-sik, who gets locked up in a hotel room for no reason apparent to him. After he is released from captivity, he goes on a mission to find those who had jailed him. Kang Hye-jung, Yoo Ji-tae and Yoo Yeon-seok play supporting roles.
 
The re-release of “Oldboy” earning more than a million dollars at the U.S. box office is noteworthy as only 250 theaters screened the film across the country.
 
“Oldboy” had garnered critical acclaim and accolades globally, winning the Grand Prix at the 2004 Cannes International Film Festival and the Best Film at the Korean Film Awards.
