Korean tech giants Samsung and LG will showcase their latest energy efficient apps and appliances powered by AI at the upcoming IFA 2023 trade show in Berlin.

This year's IFA runs from Friday to Sept. 5, with over 2,000 companies from 150 countries and over 180,000 buyers expected to participate in the world’s largest trade show.

Samsung Electronics will unveil the new Bespoke AI washer-dryer which doubles as a washer and a dryer, for the first time at IFA 2023. The model's AI function detects the weight, fabric softness and soil level of each load based on the water turbidity to optimize the amount of water and detergent.

"Samsung's first Bespoke AI washer-dryer not only makes doing laundry much easier by eliminating the hassle of transferring laundry from the washer to the dryer, it also saves space," said Lee Jun-hwa, the head of the customer experience team of the digital appliances business at Samsung Electronics. "Doing laundry will be easier and more pleasant, while also saving energy in AI energy mode."

The company will also introduce an AI-powered food platform dubbed “Samsung Food," which uses AI to create customized recipes based on the user's tastes and nutritional needs, taking into account the user's culinary skills and the time it takes to cook the food. To suggest the best meals, Samsung plans to connect Samsung Food with Samsung Health, its healthcare tracking app, to allow users to receive recipes based on their weight, body composition and calorie count.

The app will also be linked to Samsung’s Bespoke Oven so that it can send personalized cooking instructions and automatically set the temperature and timer for the food prepared. Samsung plans to connect more appliances with the app, possibly even non-Samsung brands, in the future.

The app will be serviced in 104 countries in eight languages from Thursday, a day ahead of the trade show.

“We anticipate that Samsung Food will play the role of a personal nutritionist,” said Park Chan-woo, executive vice president and head of the Service Biz Group of the Digital Appliances Business at Samsung Electronics.

Samsung’s flagship products, such as the 98-inch quantum light-emitting dioxide panel (QLED) TV and the Frame-Disney 100 Edition, which services content from Walt Disney Animation Studios, Pixar Animation Studios, Marvel, Lucas Film and National Geographic, will be exhibited, as well as its latest mobile electronic devices such as the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Z Fold 5.

LG Electronics will unveil a lineup of energy efficient products under the theme of “Net-Zero House” at the trade show, including refrigerators, dryers, washers and dishwashers.

LG will showcase its latest washer-dryer from its LG Signature series, which, similar to Samsung's new Bespoke model, combines washer and dryer functions in one machine. It utilizes AI which selects the optimal wash cycle for clothing to help extend its lifespan. The AI dry feature is able to detect the laundry weight, fabric type and moisture content to optimize the suitable drying time and the temperature for different kinds of clothing. The new dryer uses a R290 refrigerant, known for its low Global Warming Potential.

Both the washer and dryer come equipped with LCD touch control panels in case users want to control the features that way.

The latest TV lineup such as the LG Signature OLED M, LG OLED evo and LG QNED TV will also be featured at the trade show. The LG StanbyME Go, a 27-inch touchscreen TV housed in a briefcase tailored to travelers, will be introduced to the European market for the first time.

The portable touchscreen TV began selling in North America and Europe this month.

LG will also present an experiment zone dubbed “Home Energy Platform,” where visitors can monitor and control household appliances and its energy consumption through the LG ThinQ app.

"LG's home appliances with high energy efficiency help households to save energy, shrink utility costs and lower their carbon footprint," said Lyu Jae-cheol, president of LG Electronics Home Appliance & Air Solution Company.

After IFA 2023, both companies will participate in the IAA Mobility in Munich, better known as the Frankfurt Motor Show. It's the first time the two companies are participating in the auto show, which runs from Sept. 5 to 10.
