Huons is entering the U.S. health functional food market with their Quisqualis Extract Powder, targeting customers concerned about their prostate health.
Quisqualis, an herb native to Myanmar and Malaysia, has been widely used in traditional medicine and is also mentioned in “Dongui Bogam,” a Korean traditional medical encyclopedia.
On Sept. 5, Huons announced that Quisqualis Extract is recognized as a raw material for men's prostate health and obtained a patent from the U.S. patent office to use it as a functional ingredient for the prevention and treating of prostate enlargement.
Huons has obtained patents not only in the domestic market but also in five countries in Europe, Japan, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia and now the United States, which testifies to the raw material's value. The company plans to secure a global patent to protect its technology.
Quisqualis Extract Powder was developed through joint research with Chungnam National University beginning in 2017. Huons obtained exclusive rights by transferring the technology for Quisqualis Extract Powder from Chungnam National University and then successfully developed the technology and commercialized it.
Quisqualis Extract Powder has been shown to help reduce various prostate-related discomforts in daily life, such as nighttime urination, residual urine and difficulty urinating and improve subjects’ International Prostate Symptom Score (IPSS) via animal experiments and human tests.
As a result, the product has garnered a multitude of awards, including at the Korea Global Power Brand Awards, just half a year since its rollout.
Against this backdrop, Huons hopes to achieve a high performance in product sales as prostate-related diseases always rank highest among middle-aged men’s health concerns. Due to patients’ tendency to avoid seeking hospital treatment, the product, which enables daily home-based care and prevention of related diseases, is expected to be appealing to customers.
“The range of health functional foods and medicines that patients can choose from is limited considering the high number of middle-aged men who struggle with prostate-related problems. When choosing a male health product like Quisqualis, it is important to check whether the product is certified by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety,” an official from Huons added.
