Lee Kang-in will join the Korean team at the Asian Games on Sept. 20, the Korea Football Association announced Friday.
Lee, who has been sidelined with an injury for the past month, will leave Paris on Sept. 19 to fly to Hangzhou, China, joining the Korean squad on Sept. 20, the KFA said after discussing Lee's fitness with his club Paris Saint-Germain.
Korea's Asian Games campaign starts on Sept. 19 with a game against Kuwait, with the second group stage game scheduled for Sept. 21 against Thailand. While Lee will be in China for the second game, it is unclear whether he will actually be available to play so soon after arriving in the country.
Lee was sidelined on Aug. 22 with a quadriceps injury that PSG said would take him out of commission until the middle of September. He missed the FIFA international break, but began training earlier this week.
Attending the Asian Games could prove crucial for Lee’s career, as the tournament is a rare chance for him to earn a mandatory military exemption if Korea wins a gold medal at the Asiad. Both Son Heung-min of Tottenham Hotspur and Kim Min-jae of Bayern Munich earned their exemptions from the 2018 tournament.
