The South Korean women’s basketball team convincingly defeated Thailand 90-56 in their first group stage game at the Hangzhou Asian Games on Wednesday, starting the tournament strong in their bid to win a fifth Asiad gold.
The game began at Hangzhou Olympic Sports Centre Gymnasium in Hangzhou, China, and it looked one-sided from the start.
South Korea scored a dozen points early in the first quarter, giving Thailand no points apart from a free throw that secured just one point in the beginning. An attack led by Korea's Park Ji-su extended the team's lead, ending the quarter 25-7.
The second quarter also saw South Korea dominate, with Lee Hae-ran showing a good performance alongside Park to take the score to 38-11 before ending the quarter at 47-18.
South Korea kept that lead during the third quarter, persistent with attacks, pushing Thailand to remain on the defense. The score became 75-33 by the end of the third quarter.
By that point, the game seemed like a contest of how many points South Korea could score until the end of it.
South Korea added 15 more points during the last quarter to end the game 90-56, locking in their first victory in the group stage.
A total of 12 countries, divided into three groups, will shoot for women's basketball gold in this year’s Asiad. Top two teams from each group and two best third-place teams reach the quarterfinals.
The last time the South Korean women’s basketball team won a gold in the Asiad was in 2014, when they beat China in the final.
South Korea will next face North Korea in the group stage at the same venue on Friday, before playing Chinese Taipei on Sunday.
