The first wave of cold weather warnings for this season were issued across the Korean Peninsula including Seoul on Monday, as a cold front swept through accompanied by strong winds.
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) sounded the alarm at 9:00 a.m. Monday as temperatures nosedived following Sunday's rain showers.
The weather agency issues the warning between October and April whenever the temperature drops 10 to 15 degrees Celsius or more compared to the previous day, down until it reaches 3 degrees Celsius (37 degrees Fahrenheit).
Additionally, the warning is also issued when the temperature falls 3 degrees Celsius below the average for the same period.
On Monday, the meteorological agency raised the alert level in the mountainous regions of Gangwon and North Gyeongsang.
This heightened warning system is activated when the lowest temperature plummets to minus 15 degrees Celsius or below for two consecutive days.
The strong wind with a minimum speed of 20 meters per second (45 miles per hour) resulted in several reported accidents, including a lamppost falling onto a vehicle in Uijeongbu, Gyeonggi, and a roof being torn off at a market in Ganghwa, Incheon.
An individual had to be rescued after being trapped in a strong current along a stream in Bundang, Gyeonggi.
Jeju International Airport had to either ground or cancel flights due to strong winds.
