Voting for the KBO’s 2023 Golden Glove awards is set to close Friday as 81 players across the league are up for 10 trophies set to be presented at the awards ceremony on Dec. 4.
The annual Golden Gloves recognize the top players in each position after the season’s end, and voters are selected among members of the media such as reporters, photojournalists, announcers and commentators on the KBO.
Voting opened Wednesday as KBO President Heo Gu-yeon announced the finalized candidate list among players who met the selection criteria for their positions this season.
NC Dinos pitcher Erick Fedde, who was recently named the KBO’s newest MVP, is among the list of 28 pitchers nominated in the position, which has the most crowded field.
None of the 10 KBO clubs have candidates in all eight categories — pitcher, catcher, first baseman, second baseman, third baseman, shortstop, outfielder and defensive hitter.
This year’s Korean Series champions LG Twins have the most nominated players, with 12. Runners-up KT Wiz have 11, and the SSG Landers have 10.
Among the 28 nominated pitchers are LG’s ace Casey Kelley, Choi Won-tae, Im Chan-kyu and Adam Plutko; KT’s Ko Young-pyo, Wes Benjamin, William Cuevas and Park Yeong-hyun; SSG’s Kim Kwang-hyun, Oh Won-seok, Noh Kyung-eun and Seo Jin-yong; NC’s Fedde; Doosan’s Raul Alcantara, Gwak Been and Brandon Waddell; Kia Tigers’ Yang Hyeon-jong and Lee Eui-lee; Lotte Giants’ Charlie Barnes, Park Se-woong and Kim Won-jung; Samsung Lions’ David Buchana, Won Tae-in, Kim Jae-yun and Oh Seung-hwan; Hanwha Eagles’ Felix Pena; and Kiwoom Heroes’ Ariel Jurado and Ahn Woo-jin.
Seven catchers are nominated: LG’s Park Dong-won, KT’s Jang Sung-woo; SSG’s Kim Min-sik; Doosan’s Yang Eui-ji, Lotte’s Yoo Kang-nam, Samsung’s Kang Min-ho and Hanwha’s Choi Jae-hoon.
The three nominated first basemen are LG’s Austin Dean, KT’s Park Byung-ho and Doosan’s Yang Suk-hwan.
Among the five second basemen are NC’s Park Min-woo, Doosan’s Kang Seung-ho, Kia’s Kim Sun-bin, Hanwha’s Jung Eun-won and Kiwoom’s Kim Hye-seong.
And among five third basemen are LG’s Moon Bo-gyeong, KT’s Hwang Jae-gyun, SSG’s Choi Jeong, Doosan’s Ho Kyoung-min and Hanwha’s Roh Si-hwan.
There are eight candidates up for the shortstop award — Korean Series MVP LG’s Oh Ji-hwan, KT’s Kim Sang-su, SSG’s Park Seong-han, NC’s Kim Ju-won, Kia’s Park Chan-ho, Lotte’s No Jin-hyuk, Samsung’s Lee Jae-hyeon and Hanwha’s Lee Do-yun.
Three outfield awards will be given out regardless of position. The 20 nominees are LG’s Park Hae-min, Hong Chang-gi and Moon Sung-ju; KT’s Anthony Alford, Bae Je-seong and Kim Min-hyuck; SSG’s Choi Ji-hoon and Guillermo Heredia; NC’s Jason Martin and Park Kun-woo; Doosan’s Jung Soo-bin and Jose Rojas; Kia’s Socrates Brito and Lee Woo-sung; Lotte’s Kim Min-suk and Yoon Dong-hee; Samsung’s Jose Pirela, Kim Hyeon-joon and Koo Ja-wook; and Hanwha’s Lee Jin-young.
And there are five designated hitter nominees — LG’s Kim Hyun-soo, SSG’s Choo Shin-su, NC’s Son Ah-seop, Kia’s Choi Hyoung-woo and Lotte’s Jeon Jun-woo.
The 2023 KBO Golden Glove awards ceremony will be held on Dec. 11 at the Coex Auditorium in Gangnam District, southern Seoul.
