Samsung Electronics became Tesla's first partner that utilizes the EV producer's API, or application programming interface, to connect Tesla's services to Samsung's SmartThings app.
The collaboration will allow users to monitor and manage the energy status of not only Tesla's EVs but also the automaker's home charging system, Powerwell, and Solar Panels through SmartThings.
"Tesla Energy's customers can now manage and monitor the power status of their homes through SmartThings Energy and Samsung devices in addition to the Tesla app, ensuring more access and connectivity," Samsung Electronics executive vice president Park Chan-woo said in a press release.
"This new collaboration is a key milestone for Samsung Electronics in making our solution more widely available outside home appliances."
The app will also be able to connect with Tesla's Storm Watch, which charges Powerall to maximum capacity in case of severe weather alerts and sends notices to the user through Samsung TV or mobile. If a power outage occurs, SmartThings activates energy-saving mode to minimize energy consumption on home appliances so that Powerwall can have more backup energy.
"At Tesla we are excited to add capability to our products to interact with other intelligent devices and software in customers' homes," the company's senior vice president said in the press release. "We are pleased that Samsung has chosen to be an early developer, given its leading position in consumer smart home technology."
The new service will be first demonstrated at the upcoming CES 2024 and will officially launch in the second quarter of this year in the United States.
