Artist Yoo Hwa-soo has been named the winner of the 23rd SongEun Art Award.
The 44-year-old, whose winning piece centers on tree bark and branches, will receive 20 million won ($15,200) from the SongEun Art and Cultural Foundation and be able to hold a solo exhibition soon at SongEun Art Space in Gangnam District, southern Seoul.
Two of Yoo's works will be bought and added to each of the collections of the foundation and the Seoul Museum of Art.
"Gesture of Cultivation," the installation he entered for the competition, explores how technological development makes humans increasingly insensitive toward preserving the environment.
The piece uses smart farm technology to collect data about and care for non-edible mushrooms living on a dead tree's bark.
The 20 finalists for this year's SongEun Art Award, including Yoo, are currently holding a group exhibition at SongEun Art Space, which continues until Feb. 24.
The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Mondays to Saturdays. Admission is free.
