The second part of director Choi Dong-hoon's fantasy film "Alienoid" topped the box office on its opening day Wednesday, making up for the disappointment from the first installment.

The film garnered 94,448 moviegoers on the first day of its release on Wednesday, debuting at No.1 at the domestic box office, according to the Korean Film Council's integrated computer network for film tickets.

The film is followed by the Disney animation "Wish" and historical dramas "12.12: The Day" and "Noryang: Deadly Sea."

"Wish," the runner-up, attracted 35,622 moviegoers Wednesday with an accumulated audience of 746,920, followed by "12.12: The Day" at 24,095 daily with an accumulated audience of more than 12 million.

"Alienoid 2" centers around a group of time-traveling swordsmen, people with superpowers and aliens trapped inside human bodies, who get entangled in a battle involving a holy sword.

The characters uncover secrets and travel to the future to save people, according to CJ ENM.

The film stars major actors such as Kim Tae-ri, Ryu Jun-yeol, Kim Woo-bin and many more.

"Alienoid 2" is also receiving a positive critical response, getting a 93 percent score on the Golden Egg on CGV, the distributor added.

The first part of "Alienoid," which premiered on July 20, 2022, attracted only about 1.54 million viewers.

Choi's previous films, "Jeon Woo-chi: The Taoist Wizard" (2009), "The Thieves" (2012) and "Assassination" (2015), attracted audiences of 6.13 million, 12.9 million and 12.7 million, respectively.
