A woman in her 60s died after bungee jumping from an indoor recreational attraction in Starfield Anseong in Gyeonggi on Monday.

She hit the floor after jumping off an 8-meter-high (26-feet) bungee platform around 4:20 p.m. at the “Smob” facility located on the third floor of the Starfield Anseong mall.

The police said the jumper had safety gear on, however, the carabiner — the safety and rescue hook — was not fastened.

Safety personnel were present at the jumping deck and landing areas.

Although the victim was transported to the hospital at 4:27 p.m. after receiving CPR, she was pronounced dead at 5:25 p.m.

The police will investigate if any lack of safety measures or occupational negligence caused the accident. The police official said no details could be shared currently.

Smob is a tenant at Starfield Anseong.

The mall’s operator, Shinsegae Property, shared its condolences and promised to make all possible efforts in coordination with Smob to help bereaved families overcome any psychological and physical distress.

The company said Smob at other Starfield branches in Gyeonggi — Hanam, Goyang and Suwon — will be closed on Tuesday to conduct safety maintenance and training with its employees.

Smob at Starfield Anseong will remain closed indefinitely.

Shinsegae Property promised to fully cooperate with the investigative authority to identify the precise cause of the accident.

“The company will carry out safety inspections for possible accidents that can be caused by [daily] operations at all retail spaces in all Starfield branches starting from Tuesday,” Shinsegae Property said in its statement on Tuesday.

The property company also pledged to enforce safety procedures to prevent future incidents.
