Samsung's Ho-Am Foundation names prize winners for contributions to sciences, arts and society

Six recipients of the Samsung Ho-Am Prize were named on Wednesday by the Ho-Am Foundation, with the most women included on the list in the award's 34-year history.
Prof. K. Heran Darwin of New York University was the recipient of the Chemistry and Life Sciences award, while the late Dr. Sae Woo Nam of the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology was recognized in Physics and Mathematics.
Prof. Lee Su-in of the University of Washington and Prof. Peter Park from Harvard Medical School were awarded in the fields of Engineering and Medicine, respectively. It is the first time a woman has been selected as a recipient of the engineering award.
Renowned novelist Han Kang and Sister Geradine Ryan were recognized in the Arts and Community Service categories.
Awardees will each get a certificate, medal and cash prize of 300 million won ($278,000).
The evaluation of candidates was a four-month process involving 46 scholars and experts from Korea and abroad as well as 65 overseas academic advisers, according to the foundation on Wednesday.
Ho-Am said that in the academic field, those who conducted innovative research in traditional science as well as in the cutting-edge IT sector were recognized.
The Samsung Ho-Am Prize was founded in 1990 by the late Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee with a vision of contributing to the development of social and cultural achievements in Korea. A total of 176 recipients have been named so far with 34.3 billion won in prize money distributed.
The award ceremony for this year will be held on May 31.
