LG taps Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital for medical robot development project

LG Electronics recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital in a bid to upgrade the electronics maker’s CLOi robots for medical services.

The two entities will collaborate to develop robotics software optimized for medical institutions. It will involve validating scenarios for robots to function in particular medical situations and coordinating tailored robotics systems or product lines useful for hosptials.

The electronics maker has particularly high hopes for its LG CLOi ServeBot, which it showcased for the first time at CES 2024. The ServeBot can load up to 30 kilograms (66 pounds) of items in its four compartments, enabling easy delivery of medical supplies in various sizes. Internally, the compartments are covered in antibacterial materials and come equipped with ventilation fans for hygiene. Locking mechanisms exist to prevent theft or the tampering of items.

The ServeBot also utilizes laser-based sensors and cameras to recognize surrounding objects, analyzing them with AI to easily navigate its way throughout the hospital environment.

Its 10.1-inch touch screen can provide information to patients, caregivers and visitors when required, guide them to pharmacies and payment counters and help them utilize other medical facilities.

“By using the LG CLOi robot to handle repetitive tasks, such as faciility guidance and delivery, our goal is to increase task efficiency for medical staff and provide visitors with a special robot medical service,” said Noh Gyu-chan, head of LG Electronics’ robot business, in a statement.

Yu Kyung-ho, director of Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital, hopes the collaboration can improve the quality of medical services and set new standards for medical service robots globally.
