HEUKSAN ISLAND, South Jeolla — Ecotourism has been a travel buzzword for decades, though it often remains an abstract concept that looks great in theory but is quite marred in practice.

생태관광이 여행업계에서 유행어처럼 사용된 지는 이미 수십 년이다. 하지만 이론상 훌륭해 보일 뿐, 현실에서는 꽤나 망가진 추상적인 개념으로 남아 있다.

At the far west coast of the peninsula’s bottom tip, this off-grid getaway has no bougie cabins or glamping tents. Nonetheless, it is just as — if not more — luxurious in its own right.

한반도 서해안의 가장 끝에 위치한 이 외딴 휴가지엔 고급스러운 숙소나 글램핑 텐트는 없다. 대신 이 섬 자체가 그만큼, 혹은 그 이상으로 호화롭다.

Rustic eateries serve up mountains of freshly caught, luscious seafood sans the inflated prices seen at most tourist hot spots. Nearly all its hotels — however modest — have unobstructed ocean views. The quiet of the island and the extra minutes you can discover within those folds of tranquility is something that no amount of money can buy.

이 곳의 소박한 음식점은 대부분의 관광 명소에서 볼 수 있는 부풀려진 가격 없이 갓 잡은 감칠맛 나는 해산물을 가득 담아 낸다. 섬의 거의 모든 호텔에선, 아무리 소박한 곳에서라도 방해 없이 바다를 볼 수 있다. 이 섬의 고요함과 그 평온함 속 발견할 수 있는 여분의 시간은 아무리 많은 돈으로도 살 수 없는 것이다.

As the sun was rising on a recent Friday morning, an omnipresent calm engulfed the island. Waves gently crashed on the shore and stipes of seaweed softly danced under the clear seawater. Through the crisp, salty air, the hum of ships could be heard in the distance and migratory birds with whom the island’s some 2,000 inhabitants share the space sang a bright song.

최근 한 금요일 아침, 동이 트면서 편재하는 고요함이 섬을 완전히 삼켰다. 바닷가에 파도가 밀려와 잔잔히 흩어졌고, 맑은 바닷물 아래로 볼 수 있는 해초는 부드럽게 춤을 췄다. 상쾌하면서도 짠맛이 느껴지는 공기를 통해 멀리 떨어진 뱃고동 소리를 들을 수 있었다. 섬 주민 2000여명과 섬에서 공존하는 철새들은 밝은 노래를 불렀다.

“You picked the perfect time to visit,” a passing local said with a soft smile. He’s right. Heuksan Island isn’t always a giving destination for tourists, largely because of the weather. It’s often blustery, and Yeri Port, where a few hundred travelers are dropped off annually, is closed about one-third of the year, according to county officials. Even if the ferries are in operation, one must brave various subway transfers, a high-speed train lift and two ferry rides — not to mention the very possible seasickness.

지나가던 주민은 “방문하기 딱 좋은 시기에 왔다”고 말하며 가벼운 미소를 지었다. 맞는 말이다. 흑산도는 관광객에게 항상 좋기만 한 곳은 아닌데, 이는 주로 날씨 때문이다. 신안군청에 따르면 흑산도는 종종 바람이 거세고 매년 관광객 수백명만 이용하는 예리항은 1년 중 3분의 1은 운영하지 않는다. 페리가 운행되더라도 여러 번의 지하철 환승과 고속열차 그리고 두번의 페리 탑승을 용감히 견뎌내야 도착할 수 있다. 게다가 뱃멀미에 시달릴 가능성은 매우 높다.

The journey from Seoul to Heuksan Island totals around six hours. In addition, nearly everything, including hotels, boat tours and restaurants, has to be reserved by phone instead of online. But all is forgiven once inside and immersed in the island life.

서울에서 흑산도까지 총 6시간 정도 걸린다. 게다가 호텔, 보트 투어, 음식점 등 거의 모든 것은 온라인이 아닌 전화로 예약해야 한다. 그럼에도 일단 섬 안에 들어가 깊이 빠져들면 이 모든 불편함이 용서된다.
