Gov't open to foreigners in food service industry

Prime Minister Han Duck-soo said on Tuesday that the government will look at ways to allow more foreigners to work in the local food service industry.

Han made the remark during a meeting with reporters, saying rising labor costs have been a key factor behind the increase in the cost of dining out.

"We will review measures to allow the restaurant industry to hire foreign workers when necessary. Currently, it is quite limited," he said.

Han did not elaborate, however, saying that relevant ministries need to discuss the matter and public opinion must be gathered.

He also said there is a "great lack of workers" not only in the food service industry but also at other small and medium-sized businesses and in rural areas.

"Over the long term, we will work to fill the labor force with Korean nationals, but in order to ease the current difficulties, I think it would be right to hire foreign workers," he said.
