The school announced in a statement on its website that the student "used the defense spray on campus as a prank at around 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday.” It also wrote that the affected students “were sent to hospital for treatment with the assistance of paramedics.”
The school said it is communicating with the parents of the injured students. It also noted that the other students are safe.
The school primarily educates Korean students in Tokyo and provides education to students ranging from elementary to high school.
According to a report from Yonhap News Agency, the student allegedly used the spray to prove it was real. The dispersed substance also spread through the school's air conditioning device.
The injured students are reportedly suffering from pain in their eyes along with feeling unwell.
Japanese local media reports also said later Tuesday that the victims are suffering from minor injuries.
Japanese broadcaster Nippon Television Network Corporation reported that 40 students claimed to be affected by the spray and felt ill. It also said 20 were sent to hospitals, and the remaining 20 would be transferred to hospitals.
A faculty member of the school confirmed to Yonhap News Agency that there was “an accident in a middle school class” and that the school is currently “responding” to the incident.
