Linda Cho wins costume design Tony Award for Shin Chul-soo's 'The Great Gatsby'

Linda Cho of the musical “The Great Gatsby,” produced by Shin Chun-soo of OD Company, won a Tony Award for Best Costume Design in a Musical during the live ceremony at the Lincoln Center’s David H. Koch Theater in New York City, on Monday.  
 
Cho's costumes depict the glamorous old and new money of 1920s New York. She reportedly designed some 350 outfits for the show, including 10 dresses for the female lead Eva Noblezada.

“From head to toe, there are different craftspeople who are incredible,” said Cho after receiving her award. “It literally takes so many people [...] hundreds of people to put on those costumes that you see on stage every night.”

Cho, a Korean American, is now a two-time Tony winner, having been honored with the same award for her work in the musical “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” in 2014. She was also nominated in the 2017 Tony Awards for her costumes in the musical “Anastasia.”  
 
She has an MFA in design from Yale School of Drama and a BA in psychology from McGill University.  
 
Theater designer and visual artist Hana S. Kim, another Korean American, won the award for Best Lighting Design in a Musical for “The Outsiders” with Brian MacDevitt. It was her first Tony recognition.

Kim has a BFA in visual communication from Seoul National University and an MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Her theater design work has been featured in venues including the Lincoln Center Theater, Public Theater in NYC, Manhattan Theater Club, SF Symphony and LA Opera.  
 
“The Outsiders” also won a Tony for Best Musical.  
 
“Stereophonic” took the Best Play award.  
 
The Tony Awards is an annual awards ceremony celebrating the best in Broadway musicals, plays and actors. This year marked its 77th edition.  
 
Other awards this year include Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical which went to Jonathan Groff in “Merrily We Roll Along”; Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical which went to Maleah Joi Moon in “Hell’s Kitchen”; and Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play which went to Sarah Paulson in “Appropriate.”
