Heavy rain advisory issued across capital, inland regions

A heavy rain advisory is in effect for the metropolitan area and several inland regions.
 
The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) issued the advisory as of 10 a.m. on Tuesday for areas including Seoul, Incheon, Daejeon and Sejong.
 
The affected areas also include 22 cities in Gyeonggi, all areas of South Chungcheong excluding Geumsan County and several cities and counties across Gangwon, North Chungcheong and North Jeolla.

A heavy rain advisory is issued when precipitation is expected to exceed 60 millimeters within three hours or 110 millimeters in 12 hours.   
 
From Tuesday to Wednesday, heavy rainfall of up to 120 millimeters is expected in the metropolitan and Gangwon areas, up to 100 millimeters in the Chungcheong region and between 10 to 80 millimeters in the Jeolla and Gyeongsang areas, according to the KMA.
 
Jeju Island is forecasted to receive 20 to 60 millimeters of heavy rainfall.
 
The KMA advises the public to avoid camping, as downstream water levels can rapidly increase due to heavy rainfall near upstream rivers.  
 
Individuals were also warned against visiting trails along streams or underground tunnels, and to be particularly cautious about lowland flooding, stream flooding and rapid currents.
 
The KMA also said to be prepared for accidents and potential damage to facilities due to strong winds and to be cautious of electric shocks near flooded areas and car engine failures.  
 
Drivers should be mindful that heavy rain reduces visibility and makes roads slippery, the KMA said.
 
The Korea Forest Service on Tuesday requested that if evacuation orders are issued because of heavy rainfall, citizens should evacuate to community halls and schools located away from forests.
 
In response to the heavy rain advisory affecting the capital, central and southern regions, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety activated a Level 1 operation of the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters to respond to the heavy rainfalls as of 7:30 a.m.
 
The warning level has been elevated to “caution” from the previous “attention.”
 
A strong wind advisory has also been issued for some areas in Chungcheong and Jeolla.
 
The affected areas are several cities and counties in South Chungcheong and North Jeolla, most areas in South Jeolla and Jeju Island.
