Amazon Tells Corporate Workers to Be Back in the Office 5 Days a Week
SEATTLE -Amazon told its corporate employees on Monday that they had to return to working in the company’s offices five days a week starting in January.
The new rule-up from a three-day-a-week mandate set in 2023-appears to be the most stringent return-to-office decision among big tech companies and could be a harbinger of more to come.
That Amazon, which has always operated with tighter rules for its corporate workforce than its peers, is leading the way back to the office is not a surprise. Amazon has over the years shunned plush corporate campuses and lavish employee perks common among tech companies, while giving managers attrition targets for how many people should leave their teams.
“If anything, the last 15 months we’ve been back in the office at least three days a week has strengthened our conviction about the benefits,” Andy Jassy, Amazon’s CEO, wrote in a memo. Jassy said in-person collaboration allowed Amazon to move fast and retain its culture, which he said had become particularly hard to maintain as the company grew quickly during the pandemic.
The change will affect more than 350,000 corporate employees. Amazon also has more than 1 million employees working in warehouses and operations.
An internal site for Amazon employees, viewed by The New York Times, said that attendance would be monitored by swipes of corporate badges, and that employees must return to the office even if there were not many members of their team in their location. It said the company was working to make conference rooms more available and was adding about 3,500 so-called phone booths in offices to accommodate the additional employees.
Amazon’s internal messaging channels lit up with discontent over the changes, according to screenshots of the messages. “The whole situation is just very depressing and de-motivating to say the least,” one message said.
Amazon also said Monday that it planned to increase the number of people a typical manager oversees by 15% by the end of March.
Jassy also said the company was making the change in order to flatten its organization, but employees questioned whether it could also open the door to layoffs.

새 규칙은 미국 빅테크 기업 중 가장 엄격한 사무실 복귀 결정인 것으로 보인다. 2023년 정해진 주 당 최소 3일 사무실 근무에서 회사로 나와야 하는 날이 늘어난 것이다. 아마존의 결정은 앞으로 더 많은 빅테크 기업이 사무실 복귀에 동참할 것이라는 불길한 징조일 수 있다.
아마존은 항상 동종 기업보다 직원들에게 깐깐한 근무 규칙을 적용해왔다. 이 때문에 사무실 근무 회귀를 선도하는 것이 놀라운 일은 아니다. 아마존은 빅테크 기업에선 흔한 고급스러운 회사 시설이나 사치스러운 직원 혜택을 지난 몇 년 간 외면해왔다. 이 대신 관리자에게 맡은 팀에서 자연 감소시켜야 할 직원의 수를 업무 목표로 정해준다.

뉴욕타임스가 확인한 아마존 직원 내부 게시판에 따르면 사무실 근무 여부는 사원증을 찍어 관리한다. 직원들은 자신이 속한 팀의 구성원이 사무실에 많지 않더라도 회사로 돌아가야 한다. 회사에 더 많은 회의실을 만드는 중이며, 이른바 전화 부스라고 불리는 방 3500여개를 더해 더 많은 직원을 배치한다.
아마존 내부 메신저 채널은 변화에 대한 불만으로 달아올랐다. 캡처된 메시지엔 ”이 모든 상황이 암울하고 아무리 좋게 말한다고 해도 사기를 꺾는 조치“라고 적혀 있었다.
이날 아마존은 내년 3월 말부터 보직자가 평균적으로 관리하는 직원의 수를 15% 늘리는 것을 계획하고 있다고도 했다. 제시 CEO는 조직을 보다 수평적으로 만들기 위한 변화라고 했지만, 직원들은 정리 해고를 향한 문도 열 수 있다고 의심하고 있다.
