How to say farewell to your lovely pets

PARK JONG-MOO
The author is a veterinarian.

Like all lives, pets also eventually die of old age or disease. Many pet owners are worried about what they should do when their pets age and pass away. As attitudes towards pets have changed, the way of handling the deaths of pets also changed.

In the past, when a pet died, owners often asked a veterinary clinic to do a group cremation. However, as many people now consider pets as a member of their family, more people are willing to pay the extra cost of pet funeral services for a proper farewell. The funeral for a pet is a ritual of relieving pet owners’ “pet loss syndrome.” Through the funeral, pet owners go through the process of mourning for their pet and receive comfort.

When you request a funeral at a pet funeral service, an employee will come to your house to collect your pet. Of course, a pet owner can also choose to personally take their pet over. At the funeral, a short memorial service is held, followed by a cremation and placing the ashes in an urn for the owner. The owner can watch the process in person or online. Then the pet owner can keep the urn at a memorial house for pets or bury it in privately owned property. If there is no land to bury the ashes, the funeral service often offers a lot of land to bury the urn.

In the past, some unethical companies advertised individually cremations but actually did group cremations. Now that the Animal Protection Act has a clause regulating pet funeral services, they are generally reliable now. I would like to recommend pet owners to choose prudently by asking their vets for referrals to reliable services, reading reviews and visiting the site in advance.
