Mobile carrier SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics will collaborate to improve the quality of 5G connectivity using AI.
SKT will deploy a new Samsung-developed technology known as “AI-RAN Parameter Recommender,” which leverages data from previous mobile network operations, to recommend personalized parameters for base stations. The two say the tool has improved the performance of 5G base stations and, consequently, customer network quality, in their testing.
SKT utilized deep learning to analyze the data accumulated from its existing wireless network and AI operating parameters to fine-tune Samsung's technology.
Mobile base stations may be geographically affected by unique radio environments, and 5G service quality may vary significantly between regions that use the same equipment specifications.
The companies will expand the technology to areas with frequently changing traffic patterns, such as subways, for additional training and verification. SKT also plans to further develop the AI to automatically adjust base station signals or reset the range of radio transmission when weak signals or data transmission errors are detected. It also hopes to expand the scope of parameters that the AI can optimize to include those related to beamforming, which focuses signal transmission to a particular device for better communication, and enable real-time adjustments.
“This achievement is significant as it confirms that we can maximize the potential performance of individual base stations by integrating AI,” Ryu Tak-ki, head of SKT’s infrastructure technology, said in a statement. “We will accelerate the evolution toward an AI-Native Network, which merges telecommunications and AI technology to provide a differentiated customer experience.”
