Whenever classical musicians appear on TV variety shows, I pay close attention. I wonder if such moments might offer a rare point of connection between classical music and the general public. “You Quiz on the Block” (2018-), a popular program on tvN, is one such platform. This year, the show has featured a string of classical musicians, including 10-year-old violin prodigy Kim Yeon-ah and Baek Yoon-hak, the “dancing conductor” who studied engineering at Seoul National University.

Baek Yoon-hak, 50, has an unconventional resume. After graduating from Seoul Science High School and the College of Engineering at Seoul National University, he made a dramatic career switch, studying music at Seoul National University’s College of Music and later at the Curtis Institute of Music in the United States. Though he came to music relatively late, he was soon recognized as one of the most promising young conductors. In 2013, he participated in a master class hosted by Chung Myung-whun, then music director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra, alongside prominent conductors such as Seo Jin, Hong Seok-won and Choi Soo-yeol.

Alondra de la Parra, a Mexican conductor now 45, is similarly renowned for her “podium dance.” In a rehearsal video of her conducting Márquez’s Danzón No. 2 with the Orchestre de Paris, she fluidly crosses the line between conducting and dancing. TV 예능 프로그램에 클래식 음악 연주자들이 출연할 때 유심히 본다. 클래식 음악과 일반 대중의 접점을 살필 수 있지 않을까 해서다. tvN ‘유 퀴즈 온 더 블록’도 그중 하나다. 올해 들어 ‘열 살 천재 바이올리니스트 김연아’에 이어서 ‘서울대 공대 출신 춤추는 지휘자 백윤학’ 등 클래식 음악가들이 잇달아 게스트로 등장하고 있다.

지휘자 백윤학(50)의 이력은 이색적이다. 서울과학고와 서울대 공대를 졸업한 뒤 진로를 변경, 서울대 음대 학부와 대학원을 거쳐 미국 커티스 음악원에서 지휘를 공부했다. 뒤늦게 음악을 시작했어도 쟁쟁한 지휘 신인 중 한 명으로 인정받았다. 2013년에는 정명훈 당시 서울시향 음악감독이 주최한 지휘 마스터클래스에 서진·홍석원·최수열 등과 함께 참가하기도 했다.

그는 영화음악이나 애니메이션 음악을 춤추듯 지휘한다. 보는 재미가 있어 ‘직캠’의 주인공이 됐고, 짧은 영상 콘텐트를 뜻하는 ‘숏폼’은 120만 뷰가 넘었다.

베네수엘라 출신 지휘자 구스타보 두다멜과 시몬 볼리바르 유스 오케스트라의 첫 내한공연은 열정적인 지휘에 맞춘 단원들의 춤으로 기억된다. 번스타인 ‘맘보’와 히나스테라 ‘말란보’를 일어서서 춤추며 연주했다. 악기를 돌리고 던졌다 받기도 했다. 무대에서 객석으로 불던 자유의 바람은 추억이 됐다.

음악에는 다양한 감정과 표정이 있고, 수많은 지휘자들이 저마다 다른 색깔로 읽어낸다. 춤추는 동작 역시 나름의 표현 방법 중 하나다. 오케스트라의 음악은 지휘자와 단원들의 땀방울이 맺힌 리허설에서 뼈대와 몸통이 완성된다. 실제 공연에서 지휘자의 아주 작은 움직임으로 천둥 같은 소리를 들려줄 수 있는 것도 지난한 시행착오와 약속이 있었기 때문이다.

우리가 객석에서 보는 지휘자는 단순히 음악에 맞춰 움직이는 바람 인형이 아니다. 공연이라는 빙산의 수면 아래 숨겨진 수많은 준비과정들이 연주의 진실을 말해준다.

무대 위 관객 앞에서 좀 더 나은 연주를 들려주기 위해 오늘도 열심히 리허설에 임하는 지휘자와 단원들에게 응원의 박수를 보낸다.
