GNP's Pledges for the Education Sector

Yesterday, the Grand National Party (GNP) announced their campaign pledges for the education sector, ahead of the April 13 general elections. The GNP are promising to increase the budget for education to 6 percent of the gross national product, to extend the retirement age for teachers to 65, free education at the junior high school level, and a new grading system for graduating university students.
Lee Han-ku, manager of campaign pledges for the GNP said, "We will do our best to upgrade the quality of Korean education to a level on par with other members of the OECD (Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development). The GNP will hire additional 15,000 teachers by the year 2005. To attract highly-qualified teachers, we promise to build a better pension system, to guarantee a year for sabbatical, and to extend maternity leave by 90 days."
Lee also said the GNP is committed to the creation of a special police squad to curb school violence, as well as expanding existing programs for on-the-job training and continuing education.
