Many Election Winners to See Results Reversed Due to ViolationsAccording to Yonhap News Agency, with 214 election law violation cases discovered in the 16th National Assembly elections, a considerable number of by-elections will probably be held later, the National Election Commission (NEC) said Friday.
'The courts announced it would strictly deal with election law violations to rectify the current corrupt election climate, so the ratio of cancellation of victories will rise higher than that of the preceding elections,' an NEC official said.
After the 1996 elections in which 114 candidates were caught violating election law, seven by-elections were conducted as the winning candidates who violated the election law had their elections revoked or resigned voluntarily.
A considerable number of election violators in the Thursday elections were reported to the prosecution and police, the official added.
