Flights to Taiwan Now a Major Goal

The Seoul government hopes to resume flights between South Korea and Taiwan this year, the South Korean foreign minister said Tuesday.

Direct Taiwan-Korean air service has been severed since the two countries ended diplomatic relations in 1992, just before South Korea opened relations with China.

"This issue will become the main pressing diplomatic task for
this year," Foreign Minister Lee Joung-binn said. "We had initial-ly planned to resolve this issue by the end of last year."

Concerning the opening of charter flights between South Korea and Japan, he said both sides are near an agreement.
