New Attack On Funding And Probes

Former President Kim Young-sam said Friday that President Kim Dae-jung ordered the prosecutor general to curtail and cover up the internal prosecution probe into his alleged slush funds two days after his election in late 1997.

"President Kim Dae-jung called on the then-prosecutor general soon after he was elected, ordering a wrap up of the internal prosecution probe," alleged Rep. Park Chong-ung of the Grand National Party, the former president's personal spokesman.

For the second consecutive day, Kim Young-sam attacked President Kim on the alleged slush fund.

Speaking through his personal spokesman, Kim Young-sam said that he knew on Feb. 23, 1998 that the newly elected Kim Dae-jung had ordered an early end of the prosecution's probe just after his election.

Political observers are keenly following the comments of the former president, who has warned that he will launch an escalating attack against his successor over the issue of slush funds.

The former president fired his first barrage Thursday after President Kim Dae-jung stated in his New Year's news conference earlier that day that Kim Young-sam's administration had doggedly pursued the matter of his alledged slush funds.
