LG unveils 55-inch PDP setsLG Electronics Inc., which has been producing only 50- and 63-inch plasma display panel televisions, is to add 55-inch sets to its repertoire, using panels made by Japan’s Hitachi. By offering the new sets, LG is looking to turn up the heat on its biggest domestic rival Samsung Electronics Co., which already offers PDP sets in all three sizes. LG’s addition of a 55-inch model to its domestic lineup is a reflection of the growing public preference for PDP screens over older projection televisions among customers looking for sets of more than 50 inches. Although 55-inch projection TVs cost less than 2 million won ($2,127), prices of PDP sets ― which offer sharper resolution ― have recently dipped below 3 million won, making them affordable for many more consumers. Market researcher Display Search recently projected that PDP TVs will account for 34.1 percent of all digital TVs measuring 50 inches or more this year, compared with 18.7 percent last year. By 2010, the market share is forecast to top 50 percent, Display Search said. by Kim Chang-woo
