2 new releases thaw ‘Frozen’

Disney’s “Frozen” was finally dethroned by two new releases in Korea’s box office last weekend, according to the Korean Film Council.

“Pompeii,” a story about the ancient Roman city that was buried in the ashes of Mount Vesuvius, opened on Thursday at No. 1, pulling in 462,666 admissions during the weekend. The Korean movie “Tabloid Truth,” which also opened Thursday, talks about one of the most serious issues in the entertainment business: rumors. It landed in second place, with 440,829 admissions.

Another Korean movie, “Miss Granny,” which has been a strong player in the box office for the last four weeks, fell to No. 3, bringing in 383,995 admissions. And finally, “Frozen,” which has dominated the box office for more than a month since opening on Jan. 16, dropped to fourth place with 377,574 admissions.

A remake of the 1987 movie “Robocop” was in fifth place, taking in 126,717 admissions. “Venus Talk,” which debuted in fourth place last week, stumbled to sixth place, with 96,198 admissions.

“Another Family,” which was shown on the smallest number of screens but was, surprisingly, in fifth place for the last two weeks, was pushed down to No. 9, with 32,700 admissions from 156 screens.

Meanwhile, at the U.S. box office, animated comedy “The Lego Movie” kept its top spot for the third straight weekend, while “Pompeii” debuted in third place.

“The Lego Movie,” which was last weekend’s No. 8, failed to stay in the top 10 list this weekend in Korea.
