Select stores aim to make shopping special again : Carefully curated shops appeal to those with a distinct style

Shopping can be fun experience, but it doesn’t always turn out to be so. Sometimes, it can feel like the most difficult of challenges to find the thing you are looking for among the vast array of products laid out at a department store. In theory, it seems that the more choices one has, the easier it must be to choose. But ironically, when there’s nothing that stands out from the rest, looking through endless shelves to make a final decision can become even more stress-inducing.

To lessen the burden for indecisive customers who’d rather choose from 10 options instead of hundreds, smaller select shops are opening up across Seoul that present a carefully curated set of household decorations that may be difficult to choose from because of their quality, instead of their quantity. From Itaewon and Hannam-dong in central Seoul, Seongsu-dong in eastern Seoul, to Cheongdam-dong, Nonhyeon-dong and Sinsa-dong in southern Seoul, pop in for a visit to the small shops that are leading a new trend in shopping.

Nowhere else

In Itaewon, central Seoul, there’s a select shop called Informalware which is hidden from the eyes of passersby who are not looking for it. The household goods shop sits in a modestly remodeled residence, and since it doesn’t have any distinct marks on its exterior, it looks just like any other home in the neighborhood.

Taking a step inside the shop, what awaits visitors inside is often a delightful surprise. From a scarf patterned with a map created in the 1940s and unique pottery made by Japanese artists, to a hand-made pillow made in a village in Thailand and underwear made out of jersey, the shop carries a wide variety of goods for the home.

Although there are many types of products on display, there aren’t many models to choose from and most things have a similar look, as if they were created under a specific theme. “I have collected things that can help create a certain mood for the space it’s in, and also be used for a long period of time,” said Hong Sung-chan, owner of the shop. “I introduce products that I have used myself and that I liked.”

Other similar shops that carry household deco items include 1LDK in Cheongdam-dong, MTL in Hannam-dong, Chapter One in Sinsa-dong, and WDH in Seongsu-dong. Good Samarian Recipe in Nonhyeon-dong is a restaurant and a shop where cooked meals as well as food and other products for around the house are sold.

The shops may all be selling something different, but each of them only carry a small number of items from a handful of carefully selected brands. These shops let visitors see a range of goods pre-selected by the shop owners, unlike at department stores where it’s up to customers to look through every corner of each shop to make their choice.

Filtered by taste

The standards for choosing what will make it to the shop’s shelves are completely based on the tastes of the shop owners. When asked about how he chooses what to sell at his shop, Han Beom-soo of 1LDK answered, “They’re the things that I would like to have in my own room and wardrobe.”

Stepping inside 1LDK, the first thing visitors see is a shelf that resembles a household wardrobe. Inside is is what Han considers the shop’s must-have items. Display on the different shelves are simple and practical items such as clothes from Japan, shoes and bags that go well with the outfit and other accessories to complete the look. The shop’s name, 1LDK, comes from Japanese terminology used in household interior design, referring to a small house with a living room, dining room and kitchen.

Kim Yong-sub, a leading researcher at Business Creativity and Trend Insight, a trend research institute, pointed out that department stores may lose their competitive edge against small select shops as they fail to suggest styling methods that suit shopper’s individual tastes. “In the past, people used to go department stores just to go and see a lot of things on display in a large space, but now we have easy access to all of the cool products in the world online,” explained Kim. “It’s not just about laying [products] out, but about suggesting different things for different people after analyzing the people’s tastes.”

A lifestyle product

BO Market is a special corner shop in a quiet part of central Seoul. It’s a shop that carries basic items, but also houses a cafe and a restaurant. One corner of the shop has ham, toothpaste and instant noodles just like any other food store on the street, but it also carries imported goods that can’t be found in a common supermarket. At the other end of the shop are tables for visitors to enjoy coffee or sandwiches.

Outside the shop are picnic tables open for anyone to come and sit at. “The space is a memory of my childhood with my parents,” said Yoo Bo-ra, owner of the market. “The residents living nearby can come in and sit for a glass of wine at the outdoor terrace, and it’s become a gathering spot for them.”

Another characteristic of these select shops are that they serve more than just a single purpose, and most act as small cultural multiplexes. Good Samarian Recipe, which opened just a month ago in December 2017, is a household prop shop that sells lighting and furniture, but also a restaurant that makes and sells organic food and a small flower shop.

MTL is a cafe in Hannam-dong that also sells clothes, accessories and small furniture items. The products are there not just to be sold, but to make up a whole space, as if it was someone’s real home. “We put a lot of effort in when we came up with the plan for the shop,” said Han of 1LDK, which also features a cafe inside its store.

“These kinds of lifestyle multiplexes are a breakthrough for brick-and-mortar shops that have suffered from online competition,” said Lee Hyang-eun, a professor at the department of industrial design at Sungshin Women’s University.

Move the heart

Advanced manufacturing in the modern era has made it easier for people to collect many things, most of which they don’t necessarily need. As a result, many find themselves drawn to a more minimalist lifestyle in which they buy only things they absolutely need. This shift in lifestyle is, ironically, the reason why select shops sell things that are aesthetically-pleasing, according to experts.

Shops like Daiso, Olive Young and IKEA are “category killers” that carry as many goods as they can within their stores. In one visit, visitors make the most efficient choice by comparing the functions and prices of different goods, and which model best fulfills their needs. At big department stores and the so-called category killers, decision-making usually depends on whether a product is efficient and cheap.

Select shops stand at the opposite end of this issue. At these small shops, visitors are looking for items that simply look good and appeal to them for no specific reason. What matters most is whether the goods suit the customers’ tastes, not their wallets, which is the biggest reason why they’re becoming increasingly popular these days.

The idea of select shops has already been around for quite some time in the fashion industry, and this batch of shops carrying curated goods are considered to be second-generation select shops.

To make sure that this trend won’t go away in the near future, it’s important that these shops show a different side of the shopping experience and possibly change how we think about where to go to purchase goods. To go a step further into the shopping experience, the shops must suit the different needs and wants of their customers, thereby turning the act of shopping into pure joy itself.

“The shops must be able to go deep into people’s different tastes, similar to the successful small shops found in Japan,” said professor Lee.
