Cyberbullies take their opinions to extremes

As the Me Too movement has been gaining momentum in Korea, more and more women have come forward with stories of sexual abuse and harassment at the hands of power figures across many industries. The revelations may help put an end to sexual misconduct in the country’s arts, film and politics worlds, but it has created another social problem, this time in cyberspace.

Sexual assault victim gets grilled

“I’m really not sure if she’s a victim or a gold digger.” This comment was posted underneath a news report published on March 10 about former South Chungcheong Gov. An Hee-jung after he was questioned for the alleged rape of his female secretary Kim Ji-eun. The comment received 1,070 “agrees” and 53 “disagrees,” bringing it to the top of the replies to the article.

Kim wasn’t afraid to appear on JTBC’s “Newsroom” on March 5 to reveal that An had sexually abused her four times over the past eight months. But what she didn’t realize then was that she would fall victim to thousands of harsh comments online. Most of the comments slammed Kim, saying that, “[An and Kim] are simply having an affair.” Others said Kim had motives for coming out publicly. Kim reported the usernames of those making malicious comments about her to police on March 16.

Cyberbullying extends to the family

Late actor Jo Min-ki, 53, was also caught up in the Me Too movement as a number of his students at Cheongju University in North Chungcheong, where he had served as a professor, came forward with accusations of sexual misconduct against their teacher.

Jo committed suicide on March 9, three days before he was scheduled to be questioned by police. But even after his tragic death, netizens showed no mercy, called Jo a “coward” and said that he “will never be forgiven.” The criticisms didn’t stop at Jo but extended to his daughter, who had appeared on a reality program with her father. A comment left on her Instagram said, “You deserve to experience the same thing.”

According to experts, these insensitive comments are damaging the essence of the Me Too movement by psychologically harassing the victims and being too aggressive towards the assailants.

In fact, for a few days after Jo’s sudden death, Me Too revelations came to a near halt, indicating that many victims were hesitant to come forward.

Actor Choi Yul, who quickly deleted a Me Too post accusing actor Cho Jae-hyun of sexual misconduct, says that the halt happened because victims got scared. She said she deleted the post because she was afraid her children may fall victim to her actions.

“Some comments say that they’ll come find you and kill you,” she wrote on social media. “Who wouldn’t get scared?”

“The comments cruel enough to drive an assailant to suicide are only interrupting the Me Too movement,” said Bae Bok-ju at the Sexual Violence Relief Association.

Even with the increasing awareness of cyberbullying, the online attackers hardly feel any guilt. A source from the Sunfull movement, which was established to combat cyberbullying, said that “Cyberbullies tend to think there is nothing wrong with their actions because they are merely expressing their opinion.”

Hyun Taek-soo, the director of the Korean Social Policy Institute said, “We need to strengthen punishment for libel and be stricter with the management of portal sites.”

Cyberbullying leads to hospitalization

Korean speed skater Kim Bo-reum, who won a silver medal in the women’s mass start at the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, was hospitalized for psychological treatment after suffering attacks from cyberbullies.

“She is not a person who expresses her emotions a lot so I thought she was able to get better after the Games,” said an official from her agency. “I didn’t know she was in that much shock.”

Kim has been criticized by the public for allegedly bullying her teammate Noh Seon-yeong, blaming her for the team’s poor performance in a preliminary contest. Over 600,000 Koreans took to the Blue House online petition page and demanded Kim’s expulsion from the Korea Skating Union. Following the hatred from the public, Kim deleted all her social media accounts and completely isolated herself in the athletes’ village. However, she seemed to have recovered after winning silver in the women’s mass start and got on her knees on the ice in front of the spectators as an apology for her mistakes. Kim even showed up at an event hosted by her agency in February and said smiling, “I learned a lot from this past experience.”

Nonetheless, Kim’s mother said that her daughter “is extremely scared of meeting people.”

“[We] went to a hospital in Seoul but had to go to [our hometown] Daegu because of her serious condition,” the mother said. A source from Kim’s agency said, “Wouldn’t you be in a state of panic if you received so much hate and abuse?”

During the PyeongChang Winter Olympics people online made vile puns out of her name and called her cruel names. Some netizens went as far as writing on the social media pages of her sponsors and threatened to boycott them.

Expert opinion

Chung-Ang University psychology professor Heo Ji-won said, “People online end up making presumptions of who the ‘angel’ is and who the ‘devil’ is even before the truth comes out.”

She added, “As netizens compete to get the most likes for their comments, their words get more and more aggressive until they evolve into vicious words that cause permanent damage on victims.”

The influence of comments is growing daily. Last year, at the Gyeonggi Institute of Education, a research finding showed that teenagers tend to rely on comment sections instead of articles online as a source of reliability. A student who participated said, “I read the comments before I read the content in the article. The comment section usually summarizes the article and [I] read that to decide if the article is worth reading or not.”

Some netizens go too far with people they consider to be the “devil” and try to find and reveal their information. Recently, police booked 60 netizens who accused a bystander as the anonymous victim of Chung Bong-ju, a former lawmaker who was accused of sexual harassment.

Actor Kim Ga-yeon, who has been taking action against cyber bullies said that “government employees and politicians don’t understand the seriousness of this issue because they are not from this internet generation.” She emphasized, “[We] need to change the law and the corporate awareness so that we can control [the issue of] cyberbullies.”

Chung-Ang University media communication professor Sung Dong-kyu said, “Even the Korean president responds with a sense of calm when asked about malicious comments. The harmfulness of cyberbullying is being overlooked.” When President Moon Jae-in was asked in a press conference about his thoughts on the negative comments on his articles, he simply replied, “I’m sure there isn’t any politician who has received more hostile comments than I have. I just try to ignore them.”
