Hit shows make triumphant return : ‘Hidden Singer’ and ‘Grandpas Over Flowers’ continue to dominate TV

The hit tvN reality show “Grandpas Over Flowers” and the popular JTBC singing program “Hidden Singer” have both returned to television for the first time in three years. Despite the gap, each program is off to a strong start and has proven to be stalwarts for their networks.

“Grandpas Over Flowers Returns,” which aired its season premiere on June 29, drew ratings as high as 9.2 percent, according to Nielsen Korea. Meanwhile, JTBC singing program “Hidden Singer 5” which aired the first episode of season five on June 17, had a viewership rating of 7.9 percent for a recent episode featuring singer Psy. That was higher than the 7.2 percent rating the show had during a season three episode that featured veteran singer Lee Sun-hee.

“Hidden Singer 5” is expected to feature multiple talented artists, including Kim Dong-ryul, Naul of the vocal group Brown Eyed Soul, Park Hyo-shin, Rain and Zion. T. In each episode of the show, a singer and multiple impersonators who can mimic the singer’s voice stand behind a curtain and perform verses from the artist’s song, leaving it up to the audience to figure out who the real singer is.

Since the first season in 2012, the singing program has became a nationwide sensation.

After the fourth season ended in 2015, singing programs became the hottest trend in television and started to pop up on many networks.

Shows like SBS’ “Fantastic Duo,” MBC’s “Duet Song Festival” and Mnet’s “I Can See Your Voice,” became fan favorites, as ordinary people were given the chance to sing with their favorite celebrities on stage. Ratings for the shows were high not only in Korea but also abroad in Taiwan, Vietnam, China and Italy.

However, complications arose as these singing programs started to proliferate. It was extremely difficult to gather singers and impersonators that had not already appeared on other shows. But despite difficulties, the original hit was not ready to say goodbye.

“We never thought that season four [of Hidden Singer] would be our last season,” said producer Cho Seung-wook of “Hidden Singer.” “We were willing to continue after successfully filling our lineup.”

Season five was met with excitement from audiences and quickly returned to its position as one of the hottest shows on TV. The show featuring Psy that aired on July 1 was the highest rated episode in the program’s history. But what was more dramatic was host Jun Hyun-moo’s promise to buy chicken for the audience if Psy received more than 90 votes. Because Psy received 98 votes, this promise was kept and Jun bought 100 chickens for the 400 people who made up the show’s audience.

“Grandpas Over Flowers” has been a sensation ever since its first season. The first episode of the newest season featured members of the original cast, such as veteran actors Lee Soon-jae, Shin Goo, Park Geun-hyung and Baek Il-seob, and actor Lee Seo-jin, as well as a newcomer, veteran actor Kim Yong-gun.

The hit reality TV show features actors in their 70s, packing up and leaving for excursions around the world. Since the show’s first season in 2013, actor Lee Seo-jin has played the role of a tour guide as well as being the show’s host.

So far, the group has been on trips to Taiwan, Spain and Greece. The ongoing season has taken place in Germany and Eastern Europe, with Berlin being one of their destinations.

“Due to the old age of the four actors, it was hard for us to decide whether or not we should make another season,” said producer Na Young-seok, who is also known for the reality show “Three Meals a Day.” “But we changed our minds when actor Lee Soon-jae, who is the oldest member of the cast, asked us ‘Aren’t we going again? Let’s go again.’”

The group is heading to Germany, the Czech Republic, Austria and other countries in Eastern Europe this season. “We decided to film [this season] in these [particular] countries because of the increased discourse on unification due to the 2018 Inter-Korean Summit.”

While both “Hidden Singer 5” and “Grandpas Over Flowers Returns” will basically follow their previous formats, there will be some slight changes. In the case of the singing program, producer Kim Hee-jung, who also produced the JTBC talk show “Non-summit,” will be in charge instead of Cho Seung-wook, the producer from the past four seasons. For “Grandpas Over Flowers Returns,” veteran actor Kim Yong-gun, 72, has joined the original cast of grandpas and is the youngest of them all.

“As most movies, dramas, variety shows have turned into series, programs have become longer compared to the past,” said Park Gi-soo, a professor at Hanyang University. “Just like the halo effect from the Marvel series, people will keep reusing this [idea] until it dies out.”

살짝 틀었을 뿐인데… 더 세진 히든싱어, 꽃할배

시즌제 예능의 적정 유효기간은 얼마나 될까. 지난달 첫 방송을 시작한 JTBC ‘히든싱어 5’와 tvN ‘꽃보다 할배 리턴즈’의 화력이 무섭다. 두 프로그램 모두 3년 만에 다시 찾아왔지만 최고 시청률을 경신하면서 건재함을 보여주고 있다. ‘히든싱어 5’는 싸이 편이 7.9%(닐슨 코리아 유료가구 기준)를 기록하며 시즌 3 이선희 편(7.2%)을 넘어섰고, ‘꽃보다 할배’ 역시 9.2%로 이전 시리즈의 그리스 편(9.5%)을 바짝 뒤쫓고 있다. 굿데이터코퍼레이션 화제성 조사 결과 두 프로그램이 비드라마 부문 4, 5위를 차지할 정도다. 통상 예능 프로그램의 시즌 간격이 1년 안팎인 걸 고려하면 놀라운 결과다. 매년 트렌드가 급변하는 방송가에서 지나간 카드를 다시 집어 드는 것은 흔치 않기 때문이다.

원조 가수가 모창 능력자들과 대결하는 콘셉트인 ‘히든싱어’는 2012년 시작해 2015년 4번째 시즌을 마무리했다. 이후 Mnet ‘너의 목소리가 보여’, SBS ‘판타스틱 듀오’, MBC ‘듀엣가요제’ 등 연예인과 일반인이 함께 노래하는 프로그램 붐이 일어났다. 태국•베트남•중국•이탈리아에 포맷을 판매해 현지에서도 동시간대 시청률 1위를 기록하기도 했다. 하지만 이미 50여명의 가수가 출연한 상황에서 가수 섭외는 물론 모창자를 찾기가 쉽지 않았다.

‘히든싱어’ ‘팬텀싱어’ 등을 기획한 조승욱 CP는 “시즌4가 마지막이라는 생각은 없었다. 언제라도 라인업을 꾸리면 다시 할 수 있다고 생각했다”고 밝혔다. 그사이 오래 공들여온 강타•전인권•싸이 등 역대급 라인업이 완성됐고, 경연 프로그램에서 좀처럼 볼 수 없는 출연진에 시청자들의 반응은 폭발적이었다. 지난 1일 방송된 싸이편은 최종 라운드에서 역대 최고 점수(98표)와 최고 시청률을 동시에 잡았다. 랩 모창이 노래 모창보다 어려운 탓에 대다수가 누가 싸이인지 맞췄을 만큼 난이도 조절에는 실패했지만, 예상 점수를 두고 MC 전현무가 치킨 내기 대결을 하면서 몰입도를 높인 덕분이다. 전현무는 “싸이가 90표 이상 받으면 방청객에게 치킨을 쏘겠다”고 선언했다가 실제로 싸이가 98표를 받으면서 치킨 400인분(100마리)을 선물했다.

반면 2013년 시작한 ‘꽃보다 할배’ 시리즈가 이어지기 위해서는 할배들의 스케줄과 건강 상태가 관건이었다. 이순재(83)•신구(82)•박근형(78)•백일섭(74) 등 출연진이 현역으로 활발하게 활동하고 있는 데다 해외 배낭여행을 떠나는 프로그램 특성상 건강 문제를 고려하지 않을 수 없기 때문이다. 하지만 그 파급력은 대단했다. 유럽(프랑스•스위스) & 대만 편, 스페인 편(2014), 그리스 편(2015) 등 ‘할배들’의 발길이 닿는 곳마다 이들을 따라나선 중장년 관광객들이 쏟아진 것이다. 중장년 시청 층이 꾸준하게 유입되는 덕에 방송국 입장에선 더더욱 버릴 수 없는 카드였다.

나영석 PD는 “선생님들 연세가 있기 때문에 프로그램을 다시 만들 생각을 하기 쉽지 않았는데 가장 연장자인 이순재 선생님이 ‘한 번 안가? 또 가야지’ 하신 말씀이 도화선이 됐다”고 말했다. 독일•체코•오스트리아 등 동유럽을 선택한 이유에 대해서는 “남북정상회담 이후 통일 담론이 생겨서 시의성이 있다고 판단했다”고 덧붙였다. 실제 1회 방송에서 이서진은 베를린 장벽과 프리드리히슈타트 검문소(체크포인트 찰리) 관광에 열의를 보였다.

두 프로그램은 최대한 기존 포맷을 유지하되 딱 하나만 바꾸는 원포인트 체인지를 시도했다. ‘히든싱어’의 경우 시즌 1~4의 연출을 맡은 조승욱 CP가 물러나고 ‘비정상회담’ ‘잡스’ 등을 연출한 김희정 PD가 메가폰을 잡았다. “매회 특집처럼 꾸미고 싶다”는 김 PD의 포부처럼 ‘히든싱어’는 싸이와 전현무의 치킨 내기 대결, 강타 여장 공약 등으로 화제 몰이를 하고 있다. ‘꽃보다 할배’의 히든카드는 새로운 막내 김용건(72)의 합류다. KBS 공채 탤런트 선후배 사이로 20대 시절부터 박근형과 어울려 다니고 백일섭과 함께 하숙했던 그는 ‘젊은 피’ 역할을 톡톡히 수행하고 있다.

이 같은 시도에 대한 평가는 다소 엇갈린다. 한양대 문화콘텐츠학과 박기수 교수는 “영화나 드라마, 예능에서 시리즈물과 시즌제가 보편화하면서 포맷의 수명 자체가 예전보다 길어졌다”며 “마블 시리즈처럼 후광효과가 존재하는 한 그것이 완전히 소진될 때까지 계속 활용할 것”이라고 내다봤다. 이어 “‘히든싱어’는 누가 원조 가수인지 맞추면서 시청자의 참여도를 높이는 효과가 있다”며 “‘꽃보다 할배’ 역시 나이 든 출연진의 배낭여행에 대한 도전과 좌충우돌 여행 과정이 시청자들에게 많은 재미와 용기, 생각할 거리를 던져준다. 그런 점에서 고령화 사회에서 얼마든지 유효한 포맷”이라고 설명했다.
