Four grand prizes awarded at ESU English speech contest
The Grand Prize, the contest’s highest honor, was given to four contestants, one from each age group: Yoon Sung-hyun, a high school student from Seoul International School; Kim Soo-min, a middle school student from Seoul International School; Choi Ji-woo, an elementary school student from Handong International School; and Lee A-ri from Lila Elementary School.
Upon completing his or her speech, each participant answered questions from judges. Contestants were divided into four groups: high school, middle school, elementary upper-level and elementary lower-level. There were 30 contestants in each group.
The competition, held twice a year, was hosted by the Korea JoongAng Daily and the British Embassy in Seoul. Official sponsors of this year’s second ESU contest were HSBC Korea and Ajou University.
Distinguished guests who presented the awards included Jung Eun-young, CEO and president of HSBC Korea; Han Ho, dean of College of Humanities at Ajou University; Ryu Kwon-ha, executive editor of the Korea JoongAng Daily; and Anthony Spaeth, editor in chief of the Korea JoongAng Daily.
The Gold Prize, the second-highest honor, went to Park Jae-hyeon from Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies, Kim Aileen Yoon-a from Seoul International School, Park Hyeon-seo from Seoul Doseong Elementary School and Hong Sin-yeong from Hanbat Elementary School.
Silver prizes went to Ji Hyeuk-ju from Hanyoung Foreign High School, Cho Young-min from Seoul International School, Kim Min-chan from Seoul Boramae Elementary School and Shin Eu-gene from Seoul Jamwon Elementary School.
Bronze was awarded to Boo So-ya from Daeil Foreign Language High School, Kwon Na-yeon from Jinsun Girls’ Middle School, Cho Ae-gine from Seoul Sanghyun Elementary School and Joo Soo-hyun from Mogun Elementary School.
Winners of the Participation Prize were Hwang Sung-won from Seocho High School, Cho Gyu-bin from Ewha Girls’ Foreign Language High School, Park Joo-young, a home-schooled high school student, Kim Jeong-won from Maetan Middle School, Lee Seung-hyeok from Seocho Middle School, Lee Ji-ho from Jinsun Girls’ Middle School, Kim Che-hwan from Dokjeong Elementary School, Moon Shin-yeong from Sinseo Elementary School, Choi Joo-young from VCA Korea, Son Dong-uk from Dongrae Elementary School, Lee Sue-yeon from Simseok Elementary School and Ryu Geon-hee from Kyonggi Elementary School.
Creative prizes were given to Choi Min-suh from Korean Minjok Leadership Academy, Lee Jae-an from Kyungmoon High School, Lee Ji-seung from Kwangshin Middle School, Rhee Na-kyoung from Eonju Middle School, Koo Sung-won from Kyung Bok Elementary School, Jang Hye-bin from Seoul Wonmyoung Elementary School, Kim Jun-ho from Seoul Sindong Elementary School and Song Si-u from Seongwa Elementary School.
Yoon Sung-hyun, Grand Prize winner in the high school division, will face off against Shin Jung-won from Muhak Girls’ High School, who won the award in the previous ESU contest, to determine who will go to the International Public Speaking Competition next year in London.
