Dong-A Pharmaceutical’s Bacchus energy drink.

Dong-A Pharmaceutical’s Bacchus energy drink is celebrating its 55th birthday.

The famous energy drink was first introduced in 1961 in a pill form, before being released as a drink on Aug. 8, 1863 - the date that Dong-A Pharmaceutical chooses to recognize as its official release date.

In addition to chasing away tiredness, Bacchus is also said to help with nutritional deficiencies, reduced physical strength and even nausea. In the 1960s, shortly after the Korean War, when huge numbers of people were malnourished, Bacchus became popular as an affordable and accessible way to tackle illness and nutritional deficiencies.

Bacchus has grown steadily, becoming synonymous with energy drinks in Korea. Total sales of the drink passed 20 billion bottles last year, enough to wrap around the Earth 60 times if the 12 centimeter (4.7 inches) bottles were placed end to end.

Bacchus is the first product in the local pharmaceutical drink industry to pass 20 billion units sold.

In 2015, domestic sales passed 200 billion won ($175 billion) for the first time. Bacchus is also the only domestic pharmaceutical product to record annual sales of 200 billion won. For the third consecutive year, sales of more than 200 billion won were recorded in 2017.

Bacchus is also the number one player in the domestic health supplement market. According to the health supplement drug production data released by the Korea Food & Drug Administration last year, Bacchus’s production amounted to 231.7 billion won. Among health supplements, the share of Bacchus production is 15.5 percent, which means that one out of 10 health supplements produced in Korea is Bacchus.

Bacchus was originally an over the counter drug, but it was converted to a health supplement in 2011, and it has not missed the top position in the health supplement market since 2012. Thanks to Bacchus, Dong-A Pharmaceutical became the largest producer of health supplements in Korea last year.

The Bacchus brand power is also strong. According to a survey by the Korean Management Association Consulting (KMAC) titled the “20th Brand Power of Korean Industry in 2018,” Bacchus ranks first in the nourishing tonic category. Bacchus has held first place every year for the 20 years that the study has existed.
