A sniper raises a long-barreled rifle and aims at an unseen enemy. This is from a scene of a public service advertisement that has a twist. His barrel is aimed at someone else other than him, but as you keep watching, the scene is turned upside down. When the photo is attached to a pillar, it shows that his rifle was aimed at no one, but himself… You should know by now, what the advertisement was hinting at.

“가와사키 살상사건은 재일한국인의 소행일 것이다!” 일본 우익들 사이에선 지난주 도쿄 인근에서 발생한 칼부림 사건이 자이니치, 즉 한국계 교포의 소행이라는 유언비어가 돌고 있다고 합니다. 물론 어떠한 근거도 없는, 터무니없는 주장이지요.

“The Kawasaki attack is likely the doing of a Korean-Japanese!” A groundless rumor is said to be spreading among the Japanese far-right that the stabbings that occurred last week in the Tokyo metropolitan area was the doing of a zainichi, a Japanese term for Korean residents in Japan. Of course, this claim is without evidence and is absurd.

'조선인이 우물에 독을 풀었다'고 날조했던 1923년의 관동 대지진을 시작으로. 동일본대지진과 구마모토 지진 등 세상이 혼란스러운 시기에 어김없이 등장한 악성루머들.

The vicious rumors circulated after the 1923 Great Kanto earthquake saying, “Koreans poisoned the wells,” and appeared when all of Japan was in chaos, during the Tohoku earthquake in 2011 and the Kumamoto earthquake in 2016.

The attempt to promote solidarity from within and to transfer the responsibility to outside forces was obvious… But the groundless fabrications aimed at another do not go far, and circles back to right-wing Japanese, who are demeaning themselves. Then, how about this issue…

A lawmaker of the main opposition conservative party said this to criticize his president… which resulted in praising a so-called hostile country’s leader. On the other hand, the bickering by people who wanted to criticize the government’s response to an incident abroad made the people worried about the situation uncomfortable.
