12월 25일, 아기 예수가 태어난 날은 신앙이 있는 이들에게는 성스러운 날이겠지만… 그렇지 않은 이들에게는 그저 행복한 휴일이라는 의미… 미국의 전임 대통령이 이 두 가지의 표현을 함께 사용했던 이유 역시 서로 다른 생각을 배려하는 의미였을 것입니다. 크리스마스가 정치의 한복판에서 편을 가르기 시작한 것은 몇 년 전 그의 등장과 함께였습니다.

For people who go to church, December 25, the day when Jesus was born, is a holy day… But for those who do not believe in Christianity, it is a just another happy holiday… The reason why a former U.S. president used both phrases was to respect people with different beliefs. The point in time when Christmas was pushed into the middle of politics and pitted people against each other was when a certain man came in the spotlight a few years ago.

보수 기독교 지지층을 끌어모으고자 했던 트럼프에게 종교의 다양성을 무시한 '메리 크리스마스'라는 인사말은 무척 유용한 단어였을 것입니다. 실제로 대통령 자리에 오른 그는 승리한 전쟁을 자축하기도 했지요.

For Trump who wanted the support of conservative Christians, the greeting “Merry Christmas” was a very useful phrase that ignores religious diversity. When he became president, he actually celebrated winning the war on Christmas.

물론… 크리스마스가 편 가르기의 도구로 이용된 사례는 훨씬 이전에도 존재합니다. 순혈주의를 강조했던 나치는 종교가 다른 유대인을 구분해내고자 캐럴 가사를 독일식으로 바꾸고, 나치의 상징물로 트리를 꾸미는 등 성탄절을 나치의 소유물로 만들고자 했습니다.

Of course… Christmas was used as a tool to separate people way before this incident. Nazis, who emphasized their pure-blood principle, Germanized the lyrics of Christmas carols in order to differentiate themselves from the Jews, who have a different religion. They also adorned trees with Nazi symbols to make Christmas their own.

사랑과 포용을 이야기한 예수의 탄생을 편 가름의 도구로 이용하려 시도한 속세의 어리석음은 수십 년 전에도… 오늘에도 이어지고 있는 것이지요.

Secular society’s foolish attempts to use Jesus, who spoke of love and embracement, were carried out decades ago… and are still continued today.

After he was elected, the president of the Christian Council of Korea manifested his beliefs. And the words that spilled out of his mouth were words of disgust and provocation, which I am embarrassed to recite.

그보다 훨씬 전에 쏟아냈던 그의 기상천외한 발언들은 차치하고라도… 종교의 이름을 빌려 내뱉는 그 분열의 언어들은 수많은 개신교인들의 자존심까지 허물어내고 있으니… 그 역시, 자신만을 위한 치열한 종교전쟁을 벌이고 있는 것일까…

Even if we put aside the absurd remarks that were spoken way before his recent statements… The dividing language that he spits out between his teeth in the name of religion is tearing down the pride of numerous Protestants… Is this too, an attempt to start a religious war for personal gain?
