After 35 days, Cho Kuk quits the cabinet

Scandal-plagued Justice Minister Cho Kuk resigned Monday as investigations into his family’s suspected academic and financial crimes intensify.

가족의 학력 조작 의혹과 금융 범죄 의혹에 대한 수사가 강도 높게 진행되는 가운데 논란에 시달려온 조국 법무부 장관이 월요일 사퇴했다.

According to the Ministry of Justice, Cho informed the ministry around 1:30 p.m. Monday about his decision to resign and announced in a statement at 2 p.m., “Today, I surrender the justice minister title.”

법무부에 따르면, 조 장관은 월요일 오후 1시30분쯤 사퇴 결심을 알렸고 오후 2시에 “오늘 저는 법무부 장관직을 내려놓겠습니다”라는 성명을 발표했다.

The announcement was a particular surprise as Cho held a press briefing just a few hours earlier, at 11 a.m., to announce the Justice Ministry’s plan to reform the prosecution by shutting down special investigation departments nationwide, except for three key units in Seoul, Daegu and Gwangju.

조 장관의 사퇴의사 발표는 특별히 놀라운 일이었다. 불과 몇 시간 전 오전 11시에 조 장관은 기자회견을 열어 서울, 대구, 광주 3개 지검을 제외한 다른 지역 검찰조직에서 특수부를 폐지하는 검찰 개혁안을 발표했었다.

While Cho addressed the press in person to announce the reform measures, his resignation statement was distributed to media by the ministry without a press conference. President Moon Jae-in accepted Cho’s resignation.

조 장관이 직접 기자회견을 열어 검찰 개혁안을 발표했지만, 사퇴를 발표할 때는 기자회견을 열지 않고 법무부가 사퇴 성명을 언론에 배포했다. 문재인 대통령은 조 장관의 사직을 수락했다.

“I apologize to the people for the investigation into my family,” Cho said in the statement. “I spent day after day with the determination to do my best to reform the prosecution, even if I worked as justice minister for a few days. I believe my role has ended now.”

*apologize: 사과하다 *determination: 결심, 결의

조 장관은 사퇴 성명에서 “제 가족이 수사를 받고 있어서 국민 앞에 사과를 드린다. 비록 제가 짧은 기간 동안 법무부 장관직을 수행했지만 검찰 개혁을 위해 최선을 다하겠다는 다짐으로 하루 하루를 보냈다. 제 역할은 여기서 끝난 것 같다”고 말했다.

Cho, who served as senior presidential secretary for civil affairs in Moon’s Blue House, was appointed to head the Justice Ministry on Sept. 9. He served for 35 days.

청와대 민정수석이었던 조국은 9월9일 법무부 장관으로 임명됐고, 35일 동안 재직했다.

Ever since he was nominated in August, various suspicions surfaced about his family, including his wife’s dubious investment of family assets and academic irregularities involving his daughter. The family is being investigated on several fronts.

8월에 법무부 장관으로 지명된 이후 아내의 의심스러운 가족 자금 투자와 딸의 학력 조작 등 가족에 대한 여러 가지 의혹들이 제기됐다. 조국 가족은 여러 가지 의혹에 대해 수사를 받고 있다.
