Before being posted as a Beijing correspondent, I did a one-year program at Tsinghua University. There was a discussion over an article at the time of the severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) outbreak — a story about a man who visited his hometown.

After feeling that he had a fever on his way back, he got out of the car he was in and walked tens of kilometers to his hometown. When he approached the village, he called his wife to meet him. He told her that he would not be able to meet his parents in person and asked her to send his regards. He bowed to the village and left. Villagers erected a memorial stone for him on the spot. The story was reported around the country as an example. When I read the article, I thought it was too much.

On Feb. 9, the coronavirus crisis in China surpassed that of SARS. As of 5 p.m., Feb. 10, 909 people had died. During the SARS outbreak, 774 people died. While I write in China every day, it was only recently that the fear of the novel coronavirus felt more real and frightening than SARS. A 13-year-old kid of my friend had a fever of 37.6 degrees Celsius (100 degrees Fahrenheit). With fever medicine, it fell to 37 degrees, only to rise above 38 at night.

Various thoughts crossed his mind. As he was the only person to go outside, he thought he may have transferred the virus. Or the groceries delivered every few days may have contained the virus. He would have passed it off as a common cold normally, but things are different now. He asked me a number of questions. Can he take the kid to the hospital? Can the kid take a flight when he has a fever? Should the family wear masks at home? He said he understood the desperation of the Korean residents who left Wuhan. It felt complicated. Fortunately, his kid’s fever subsided to 36.7 degrees Celsius. But I told him not to be assured because there is an incubation period.

It is bleak in Beijing. People wear masks, surgical gloves and goggles. It is not only the patients that are spreading the virus. People who have yet to develop symptoms are also transferring the virus. The source of the coronavirus fear is the mystery surrounding where it is coming from. Beijing expects 8 million people to return from the Spring Festival holidays.

Korea is responding differently. A Korean doctor working at a hospital in China sent me a message. He attached an article on the National Medical Center press conference, which said that the new coronavirus was not a severe condition. He wrote, “The press conference by a Korean research team with no experience of treating critical patients with the new coronavirus should not be considered a norm. The crisis happened because Wuhan city approached it relaxed.”

베이징 특파원으로 나오기 전 칭화대(淸華大)에서 1년간 연수를 했다. 당시 사스(SARS) 때 보도됐던 기사를 놓고 토론한 적이 있다. 고향을 찾은 한 남성의 이야기였다. 그는 고향에 가다 몸에 열이 나는 걸 느꼈다. 차에서 내려 고향 마을까지 수십 킬로미터를 걸어갔다. 마을 어귀에 도착해 아내를 불러냈다. 부모님에게 직접 인사를 못 드릴 것 같으니 대신 안부를 전해달라고 했다. 그리곤 마을을 향해 절을 하고 다시 길을 떠났다. 그가 절을 했던 곳에 마을 사람들이 비석을 세웠다. 그의 이야기는 귀감으로 전국에 보도됐다. 당시 기사를 읽었을 땐 이렇게까지 해야 하나 싶었다. 중국의 신종 코로나바이러스 사태가 9일 사스를 넘어섰다. 사망자 수 814명(10일 오전 7시 기준). 2003년 사스 때 사망자는 774명이었다. 현지에서 매일 기사를 쓰고 있지만 사스를 능가한 신종 코로나 감염 공포가 내 일로 다가온 건 최근 일 때문이다. 가까운 지인의 이야기다. 지난 주말 올해 열세살인 큰 아이의 몸에 갑자기 열이 나기 시작했다고 한다. 37.6도. 해열제를 먹고 37도로 떨어졌다가 밤이 되자 38도를 넘어섰다.
그는 밤새 온갖 생각이 다 들었다고 했다. 밖에 나갔다 들어오는 건 본인뿐인데, 자신이 바이러스를 옮긴 것인가. 아니면 이삼일에 한 번 배달하는 식자재에 바이러스가 묻어온 건가. 평소 같으면 감기라고 넘어갔을 일이었지만 지금은 달랐다. 그는 여러 가지를 물었다. 병원엔 데려가도 되는 건가. 열이 나는 아이를 비행기에 태울 순 있나. 당장 가족 모두 집에서도 마스크를 써야 할까. 우한에서 돌아간 교민들 절박감이 이해가 간다는 말도 했다. 마음이 심란했다. 다행히 다음날 붉은 반점이 하나둘 올라오더니 그 아이의 열이 내리기 시작했다고 했다. 36.7도. 그러나 안심하지 말라고 했다. 잠복기가 있으니까.
베이징은 스산하다. 시민들은 마스크에 수술용 장갑, 고글까지 끼고 다닌다. 몸이 아픈 사람만 바이러스 전파자가 아니다. 무증상 감염자들이 바이러스를 옮기고 있어서다. 바이러스가 누구로부터 옮겨지고 있는지 모른다는 게 신종 코로나 공포의 근원이다. 베이징은 춘제 때 떠난 800만 명의 귀경을 앞두고 있다.
한국엔 온도 차가 느껴진다. 중국 병원에서 근무하고 있는 한국인 의사가 메시지를 보내왔다. "신종 코로나 중증질환 아니다"라고 국립중앙의료원이 기자회견을 한 기사였다. 의사가 함께 보낸 말은 이랬다.
"신종 코로나 감염 중환자를 치료해 본 경험이 없는 한국 연구팀의 기자회견 내용을 기준점으로 여겨서는 안 될 것 같습니다. 우한시도 안이한 태도로 접근하다 지금 사태가 벌어졌습니다."
