&#91LETTERS TO THE EDITOR&#93USFK not the wartime command

Your article, "Changing world, static alliance" published on Jan. 8, has an error about the operational control of the South Korean military.

The article quoted an official of the South Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command as saying that getting back the wartime operational control authority from United States Forces Korea would be a part of quelling anti-U.S. sentiment here.

I do not know who provided you the quote concerning operational control, but it is incorrect.

The Korean government never gives United States Forces Korea (USFK) wartime operational control of the Republic of Korea military; if it ever were required, the Ministry of National Defense would transfer wartime operational control to the Korea-U.S. Combined Forces Command, not USFK.

The error was due to a faulty translation. -- Ed.
