Heroes trade outfielder, re-sign foreign pitchers

The Nexen Heroes re-signed their two foreign pitchers yesterday.

Ace right-hander Brandon Knight, 37, who was 12-10 with a 4.43 ERA last season, signed a one-year, $460,000 deal that includes a $50,000 signing bonus.

“I truly thank the team for re-signing with me,” Knight said. “I wasn’t satisfied with what I did last season, but I will try my best to get back in shape to help the team advance to next year’s postseason.”

Left-hander Ben Hackken, 34, who was 12-10 with a 3.73 ERA last season, signed a one-year, $380,000 deal that includes a $30,000 signing bonus.

“I’m happy that I can be a part of the Heroes next season,” he said. “I will try to help the team to win the Korean Series title next season.”

The two pitchers, who are staying in the United States, will join the team in January for its spring training camp in Arizona.

The Heroes also traded 30-year-old outfielder Jang Min-suk to the Doosan Bears in exchange for 27-year-old infielder Yoon Suk-min. The deal was made to replace infielder Kim Min-woo, who was released earlier this week and joined the Kia Tigers. Kim was suspended for two weeks for drunken driving during the season. The Bears wanted to replace veteran center fielder Lee Jong-wook, who had signed with the NC Dinos.

Yoon only played 21 games this season due to several injuries and hit two home runs with eight RBI.

Jang debuted with the Hyundai Unicorns in 2001 as a left-handed pitcher and switched to being an outfielder in 2008. With good base-running skills and speed, he had 41 steals in the 2010 season. He had 87 hits and 20 steals with a .242 batting average this season.

“We expect Yoon to bring more power to the lineup with his bat,” the Heroes said in a press release.
