Samsung Lions’ Ryu signs 3-year contract

Ryu Joong-il, manager of the Samsung Lions, the 2013 Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) champions, agreed to a three-year, 2.1 billion won ($1.99 million) deal with the team yesterday.

The contract includes a 600 million won signing bonus, with his annual salary coming to 500 million won per year for the next three seasons, making him the first KBO manager to receive an annual salary of 500 million won.

Ryu will donate 200 million won of the signing bonus to charity, he said, to give back to society.

Ryu - the Lions’ franchise star shortstop - took up managing the team in December 2010; under his watch they have won three consecutive KBO titles.

“It has been a great three years with the Lions, especially because [we won] the KBO title in my first year as the manager,” Ryu said. “I will try my best to maintain the club’s status as a strong contender team in the coming seasons.”
